We always stop into Clare for Cops & Donuts. On our way back home, my wife was hungry for something not made of sugar, so we stopped in here. Staff was very friendly. Sitting area was comfortable, with a few tables outside as well. I ordered the Popeye, a strong latte with a shot of flavoring. For me, the flavoring(white chocolate in my case) was too sweet, but still good. And it’s certainly no Folger’s coffee — sometimes people think their palette is better than it really is, I guess. My wife tried a flatbread pizza. She liked it, and the chicken on it wasn’t the stringy kind you can get at typical cheap restaurants. $ 4 for my large coffee and $ 10 for the pizza wasn’t bad at all as far as coffee shops go. We would come back again.

(This review focuses solely on the coffee. Not lattes, nothing mixed– just the black coffee.) Let me start by stating that I wanted to like the place, I really did. It had a great shop to build off of(rip Coffee Talk) so it was already nicely laid out. Decorating was nice and welcoming and there was a comfortable amount of seating. Good ambiance. I’ve recently been introduced to the«real» world of coffee(ie. drinking strictly pour over black coffee) so I don’t have TOO much room to judge… But I write this review with the help of my boyfriend’s advanced palette, who does have room to judge. We started by asking what beans they had that day and were returned with«our Java blend.» Hmmm. Java blend? Now, java literally means«coffee.» Their coffee blend, then? Alright– off to an unsure start. We ordered a single cup of that and hoped for the best. The coffee was served in a large, decorative mug, filled right to the brim.(An unusual serving size of a single serving of pour over coffee.) I let him have the honor taking the first taste, but unfortunately, his face turned sour the minute he finished his sip. He set the cup down and muttered the word«…Folgers.» I tasted it and came to the same conclusion: it tastes like the cheapest Folgers coffee, straight from the carafe. What a disappointment. Long story short, The pour over is awful. Doing some research and acquiring some good beans, as well as learning the proper water to bean ratio will change this astronomically. For people simply passing through who’ve been drinking Folgers their whole lives and aren’t looking for an advanced taste(or even something that can be enjoyable as black coffee,) you’re in luck! It appears they offer many lattes and mocha blends that’ll be sweet and fun. It’s a small town and i acknowledge i shouldn’t of expected something superb. (As a fun side-note: my grandparents went here to eat a few weeks ago(breakfast? lunch? not sure, i wasn’t filled in on how the food was) and sat at a table with a vase full of acorns on it. As my grandpa was eating he noticed something moving inside. Upon closer inspection he found it was full of maggots, freshly hatched from some of the possibly rotting acorns. They promise to never return.)
