This was my first half marathon that I ran in my life. It was a scary experience at first but this review is about the course. The course is uneven in a way, the edge of the road sloped down on either side. This one isn’t as fancy as other courses where you really feel good and it’s fun after the race. It was just a feeling where you finish and you’re like yay let’s go home now. I probably wouldn’t run this one again.

This is race is a nice big small town secret that’s getting out. I ran the 20 mile Clarksburg Country Run yesterday and can report that the road running’s superb(nice soft road surfaces; plentyful well handled water stations; a great finish back into the city; lots of tree lined roads; great price; and a hot lunch afterwards. Only drawback is that the medal doesn’t indicate that it was a 20 mile run. People here are friendly and well worth the trek.

The start and finish lines were at Delta High School. Runners doing the half marathon and two-person relay didn’t start until 9:15 am. I guess it gave me an opportunity to get more sleep in. The views along the course were serene, but I was more focused on my pain and willing my body not to get a side stitch. At the half way point/relay exchange zone, runners do a u-turn. One thing I wished they provided were directions from the start line to the exchange zone and back. When I finished, I walked to my friend’s car which was parked a mile away because we were unsure on how to get to the relay exchange parking. I usually wear the shirts races provide, but the white long sleeve tech t-shirt didn’t fit. I guess my arms are too short. Country hospitality with a hot meal was provided after the race at the cafeteria, which consisted of a dinner roll, pasta, salad, fruit, and cookies. Thoughtful! Arrowhead water, Power Bar Energy Bars and Energy Blasts, as well as samples of Dove deodorant, Emergen-C packets and Lipton Tea and Honey to go packets were given out. I love free stuff! Who doesn’t?

A thoroughly enjoyable, fairly small race with 4 different distances, plus kids’ runs, this one is a little hidden gem, much like the Delta itself. Well-organized, good parking. The route, inexplicably described by some as boring, takes one through gorgeous vineyards and down tree-lined levee roads for an almost meditative amble through our area’s agricultural heritage. Near-ideal weather and the changing colors of Fall added to the great experience.

A bit of a drive for a half, but I still had a good time. Pros: * 5K, 10K, half, &20 mile runs * Late start(around 9:00, as opposed to 7:00 or 8:00 like most road races) * Medals for the half &20 milers * Pretty long sleeve tech shirt * Flat, fast course with few turns * CHEAP(the half was $ 45) * Free showers & lunch after for runners * Plentiful port-a-potties Cons: * The road is a bit narrow & canted, so it can be hard on the legs if you don’t manage to run right in the middle. * BORING course. * Not much parking — car pool or get there early. Clarksburg is really about 20 minutes drive from downtown Sacramento with traffic. For some reason I thought it was extremely far away. Every year Clarksburg hosts a run in November. The distances change sometime, this year there is a 5k, kids fun runs, half marathon, and a 20 mile distance. The 20 miler is mostly for CIM participants that are trying to tune up their race time. I went with the half as I had no desire to run any further than 13.1 miles as of right now. Parking isn’t too much of a hassle, plenty of street parking and high school(Delta High) parking. There were plenty of porta-potties for the amount of people there and I didn’t have to wait more than 2 minutes to access one. The caveat is that the 20 miler starts at 9:00am and the half starts at 9:20. These times are extremely late for a race of these distances, even if it’s late in the year. The run is extremely flat and fast, on mostly asphalt roads. There isn’t much crowd support because of the roads, but there were ample hydration stations and even a cheerleading squad along the way. I only saw one porta potty the whole way though, so beware. There was a band at mile 6 that was playing, but most of the run is quiet and pretty. The fall foliage makes for a nice backdrop while running, but all in all its a pretty boring run. Out and back, so bring an ipod or a friend. Finish line had an announcer calling out names and ages. Cute little kids handing out medals(or in my case I snatched it out of his hand because my calf was about to cramp, sorry kid) there was water, orange wedges, and apple wedges available. There is also a free hot lunch available for participants. I walked into the cafeteria looking for a bagel and nearly threw up. Sorry, while the pasta and coleslaw looked great(and free!) I’m unable to eat immediately after a long run(or smell food). I apologized to the ladies, told them the food looked great, but just grabbed a dinner roll. Overall: Cheap Run Pretty, fast, boring course Finisher Medal + Tech Shirt Free Hot Lunch Little crowd support Organized Late start I probably wouldn’t run it again, but not a bad race.
