Good courts, friendly people and a nice view of the lake(sans the trains rushing by) makes Battery Park a pretty nice place to get in some volleyball. Comparing it to only other sand courts around(Whiskey Island) I’d say Battery Park is cleaner, has a better vibe, offers benches and a nice pergola to rest under and is in a prime location to grab an after-game snack and/or drink. The only downside to Battery Park are the courts’ proximity to the train tracks. The trains are super loud and if your ball goes flying into a train or rolls onto the other side of the tracks, it’s pretty crappy. Other than that, no complaints!

I played several games here recently as part of the corporate challenge. It’s a great location for some sand VB. nestled behind the recent to new housing development, these courts will soon become very popular. There are quite a few awesome watering hole and eateries nearby in the up and coming Gordon District. One of my favorite of tese is Reddstone, is across the parking lot from these courts. Given that this review is of the courts themselves, I found multiple of the courts to be lumpy. As a VB player you know how significantly uneven courts can adversely affect your game. The sand was clean and of good quality, but was also some what unevenly distributed. One of the other problem was that these courts do not offer too much extra room outside of the courts — many out of bounds hits would end up in the surrounding parking lots. On a hot day, it’s almost impossible to step onto the hot asphalt to retrieve your out of bounds ball. We had to heavily rely on the generosity of by standards to retrieve the balls. These courts have great potential and I’m sure will get popular over time. At the time of this review I feel they have some ways to go yet.
