Ahh, the 49’er. This is a one-of-a-kind restaurant. It certainly lives up to its name: located near the corner of 49th and Broadway, the prices(and décor) seem to reflect the year 1949. This place is INSANELY cheap. I cannot emphasize to you how ridiculously cheap this place is. I ate here once with four people for dinner, and it came to under $ 10. You buy items individually: a burger, cheese for a few cents more, the tomato, lettuce, each a few cents more. The food is very, very simple, but not bad. Why does one come here? Besides the fact that it’s open really late at night(although who would want to be in this neighborhood that late at night is another question), one comes here for the atmosphere. Much of the time, a cop will be enjoying a cup of coffee here. There’s an old arcade game in the corner. All sorts of people come in here, and many of them look like they’ve stepped out of a time-warp. You could say this place is retro but something gives me the feeling that they just haven’t renovated for a very long time. I would recommend checking this place out… if only for the experience.
