Found Canopy just by driving by. Did a U-turn on Detroit just to check it out. Very glad I did. Part vintage — retro home goods and part art gallery, this place makes for fun browsing. I’m partial to the era of the vintage items which mostly seem to come from the 50s-70s, although I am sure that changes all the time. Growing up in the 70s and 80s, many items are reminiscent of my childhood. But the owners clearly know the difference between what showcases its time without being dated. Prices seemed reasonable to me. I left with a divided ceramic tray of brown with orange splotches in perfect condition, $ 22. Lots of lovely glassware, serving items, knick knacks and furniture are displayed throughout the store among fun local artist pieces. I will definitely add Canopy to my rainy day browsing. Never know what treasure I may find that I didn’t know I needed.

I watched a documentary about my friend, the artist John G at Canopy Collective. At the time, I did not know Canopy existed. My brother told me to meet him at Canopy. I said, should I bring a can of pee? Meaning a metal container of urine. That night was the last night my brother spent with my father before he died. The last place we spent time with him as brothers and as a family. This place will always be special for that reason. My brother will be getting married at Canopy in the spring. Spring symbolizes rebirth and new beginnings. They may have taken one of us away, but we are adding one more to the clan. I am sick of all the Cleveland boosterism and civic pride. CLE, Land that I Love. CLE Clothing Company. I do not even pay attention to the company names anymore because it is all very aggravating. With all of the shameless self promotion and shining of a turd, the city loses the identity that I align with. That is the grimy and grittiness that separates Cleveland from these fufu and chic places like Brooklyn, SF, Portland et cetera. I saw a shirt on Canopy Collective Instagram that said«Keep Cleveland Shitty» and I agree. Those bumper stickers and slogans saying«Keep Portland Weird» and«Keep Austin Weird» backfired. They are now overpriced and dumb like the rest of the US.

This place is really cool. At first glance it kind of looked like an antique store, but wander inside and you’ll find an incredibly unique and edgy art gallery. They have showings pretty often, typically featuring a local artist. The showings have incredible art(of course), accompanied with an unpretentious attitude and free snacks(sometimes). :) The art prices vary greatly from affordable to quite pricey. Chances are, though, that you’ll find something in your price range. I have a friend who had mentioned that he takes dancing(swing, I believe) classes here, which is also really unique!

I don’t usually do art galleries or anything of the sort. I DID come in here on a Saturday morn. They have just started doing kids art classes starting at 10am once a month. Sign up if you can. Classes are small and the teacher is awesome. This particular one was screenprinting. She LOVED it… which means I LOVE it. The shop itself has lots of cool, I think, local art. The stuff I did look at was not priced too bad. Ill be damned if Im going to spend $ 400 on the same pic of Cleveland every art putz has taken of the city since cameras were invented. They will have to find another way to pay mommy and daddy back for art school. While the kiddos are busy creating there is the hipster pancake place next door if that’s your thing and Platform is open right up the block. They also have some weird, thrown together breakfast thing. Its all obnoxious but the beer is good.

I was so excited to bump into this place today after breakfast at Jackflaps. I’ve seen a lot of shops like it in Portland and Brooklyn, but nothing quite like it here in Cleveland. It has a spacious, gallery-like feel, but is really warmly decorated with mid century modern features. The vintage décor and furniture for sale was really well curated, and the prices were totally reasonable. The local art for sale was super interesting, and there was a large variety of mediums and styles. I will totally be going back to buy décor for my home and unique gifts for people in my life that are hard to buy for. Staff was super helpful and friendly but not pushy. Oh– and there was a really cute dog behind the counter!

Wonderful space with featured work from the studio artists and great selection of mid century modern antiques in front of the store. One of the things I loved about the space is the 1090 Club in the back which houses the resident artists. In addition, it is also a large communal space for events and classes. The upcoming events are so diverse — from tango classes to film screenings.
