I may not agree 100% with many of the ideas or sentiments that are expressed in this place, but as Voltaire said, «I do not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.» As anonymous corporate bookstores like Barnes and Noble and Borders slowly eat up more and more of the market share in Cleveland, I like the fact that there are still stores who are wiling to put profits on the back burner and focus instead on speaking out against the injustices of our current government and encouraging people to come together, unite, and rise up for change. They may not want to bring about social change in a way with which I agree, but it’s better than simply putting the issues on the back burner or doing what is economically\socially expedient. In particular, I appreciate the displays in the front window too – even if they get one person to begin thinking critically about the government and subsequently motivates them to become an activist for social change, that’s one more person that won’t let America get fooled again in 2008. Obviously, the selection here is limited to political books – you won’t find Harry Potter or The Da Vinci Code or whatever’s popular these days here. You will, however, find books that cover topics that the mainstream media doesn’t cover and books that discuss alternative points of view that aren’t often heard in mass media. Again, as a Christian, I do not agree with much of what they have to say here, but I think that having a venue for the communication of alternative types of viewpoints and opinions is important in a democracy, which is why I am glad that this store is here.
