Wyndham Cleveland at Playhouse Square

My boyfriend and I bought the handicap accessible room because it was a great deal. We got charged $ 298 for the room.
Cons: Dirty unsanitized coffee maker with white crud inside and out that was placed inside the bathroom (next to the sink, odd place to place the coffee maker to begin with), dirty ice bucket, ice machine and pop machine both did not work on our floor (#11), there were no trash bags in our room in any of the trash cans, there was mildew under the toilet and in the shower, not much but very visible, rust where the toilet paper was dispensed, our room was right by the elevator, we heard it all night and throughout the day, and rusted food table when we ordered room service, you could tell it was an older table but they put a white tablecloth over, the table legs and wheels were rusted, not a pretty site while eating $ 100 worth of food, and rooms could use updating.
Pro: Excellent customer service from the valet, to the front desk, to guest services. They replaced coffee maker and ice bucket within 10 minutes of calling guest services. The FOOD was PHENOMENAL on the dinner menu when we ordered room service (steak meal & salmon meal). Morning buffet tasted ok but the the presentation of the food placement was very nice. It would’ve been cheaper to order room service for the same things that we picked up in the buffet.
All and all, never going there again. Wayyyy overpriced for a place that is not that spectacular.

The employees are very sweet at this hotel but the follow-​through isn’t there. 3 out of the 5 requests (small requests in my opinion like delivering a package up to my room) were not followed through on. Also, when I ordered food at the bar it came out way wrong from what I ordered. The walls are also pretty paper thin (My room was sandwiched between a family with a cute but very very noisy toddler) and the family kept going back between rooms (I wish they would have booked the family in the rooms next two each other especially since it was an attached room to mine)

$ 10 Buffet
The buffet gets an A+ in quality, a solid C in selection. There is a simple but very nice salad bar, a few hot items and a chef bar where he prepares the theme of the day to your specific order (burritos, pasta, etc…). There were no desserts and beverages were not included in the price. The restaurant was very clean and had the fine dining feel to it. Great lunch if you want no wait and don’t mind the limited selection.

I’m thinking that a 2 maybe generous. The room was extremely hot. I was told that because they turn the AC off in October that they had no AC in December. It felt like a sauna in there. The house keeping is really needing help. There was food left in the refrigerator from a previous guest. I had to ask for towels and then had to ask for wash clothes. They did not restock the water that I had drank. Nor did they either wash or replace the glasses I used. I had to run the water for 5 to 10 minutes before i got hot well warm water. The front desk employees were great. But the house keeping is what ruined the stay for me.

Stayed for a week. Room was not very clean at check-​in, crumbs on the counter in the bathroom, Shelves under then counter were not just dirty they were filthy, TV remote doesn’t work and I asked more than once to have it swapped, internet is garbage, shower was cold most of the time. My room key frequently deactivates. The heat in the room no matter what it’s set at never gets below 75. This place pretends to be nice, but they do a worse job at the basics than a best western or comfort inn. I’d rather stay at a shabby hotel that keeps clean and has hot water than this dump.

Great location. Rooms are old and worn but adequate. The service was unsatisfactory. Some very basic, standard amenities were missing. I would never stay at a Wyndam again.
The day before arrival, I called and asked about a refrigerator which I need to store medication. I was told they are not standard. They are available first come, first serve. The person I spoke to put a note on the reservation. When I checked in, I asked for a refrigerator. The note was on file. I was told it would be taken care of. I checked in, went to dinner, came back-​no refrigerator. I called the front desk-​no answer. I went to the front desk and made another request. The refrigerator was delivered.
The room was lacking basic, standard items-​hair dryer, note pad, pen, hotel directory book. Only one bar soap in the bathroom. Two wardrobes in the room, but only one had hangers.
The morning after checking in, I went to the front desk and asked to have a housekeeping supervisor to check the room because it didn’t appear to have been stocked correctly-​no hair dryer, note pad, pen, hotel directory book. I heard the clerk call housekeeping supervisor and report same. She said they were out of notepads, but would get me the other items. I went out for the day. When I returned in the evening, nothing had been done. I asked for the supervisor. James said he had been busy and hadn’t gotten to it yet. Shortly after, he brought up the binder with the hotel info and a hair dryer.
A door hanger menu to order breakfast was in the room when we checked in. It was never replaced after we used it. Every day, we had to ask for one at the desk.

One day, housekeeping left a dirty mug in the room. Another day, they failed to replenish the towels. Yet another day, they failed to replace the tea bags.
We lost $ 1 in the vending machine.
One day, we returned to room at 3:45 and it hadn’t been cleaned yet.
One evening in the lobby, I hears employees discussing that they wouldn’t give a guest an extra blanket. One told the other: don’t say that, just say we don’t have any.
The final night, we asked why we couldn’t tune in HBO. They sent engineering to the room. He said he would have to do a scan that would take 15 minutes. Then he said he wasn’t going to do the scan. He said it was a new TV and a provider issue. We checked the TV before he left to make sure we could still tune in the other channels and he gave us a condescending lesson on how to use the remote.
Finally we checked out. As the door closed behind us, George asked if we were checking out and had we left the room unlocked for him. We said it was locked. He asked us to open if for him to strip it. We said the keys were in the room (per the check out instructions).
Plan on buying premium wifi. Free wifi was extremely slow. When you buy premium, you can still only connect two devices. This was a problem since we each had two cell phones, a laptop and an ipad. James was supposed to comp this for us. You can guess how that went.

For the price of this hotel I expected way more. We were provided a room that was next to the elevator shaft so all night we heard the constant up/​down of elevators. The room is strangely long and we presume this to be because there isn’t a window in the «main» part of the room. It’s as if they got the local gerrymanderer to design the layout.
We are 2 people and they gave us a room that has only 1 chair so someone has to sit on the bed. If we ordered room service, I am not sure where they would choose to serve it.
There is no fan in the bathroom and the bathroom has both a bath/​shower combo and a shower. No glasses, only paper cups. Water stains on the ceiling. The water is scalding hot.
I like the restaurant/​bar and the food it good.

Excellent experience! Newly upgraded bedding was phenomenal! Excellent location as well!
Overall great stay, one downside is cleaning service knocks once then proceeds to walk in, happened more than 5 times with our 3 day stay. Love this hotel though!

I stayed at the Wyndham Hotel recently when my usual hotel chain of choice (the Hyatt Regency at the Arcade) was booked. I was originally unhappy about this because I am part of Hyatt’s rewards program and thus get points and bonuses for my stays, and am not part of Wyndham’s loyalty program. That being said, I might stay at the Wyndham for all of my future trips to Cleveland because of how much I liked it!
My positive experience started right upon arrival. The official check-​in time is 3:00 pm, but I arrived around 1 pm and asked if I could leave my bags at the hotel. The concierge informed me that my room was ready, so I was able to put my bags up there.
My room was clean, the shower in the bathroom had great water pressure, and the TV had tons of channels to choose from. The bed was incredibly comfortable as well (I noticed a sign in the elevator about brand new and upgraded mattresses and bedding, which I appreciated). I went down to the gym one morning and though they don’t have a ton of equipment, I was the only one in there so the two treadmills and a few weights machines were more than enough to accommodate me. The room had large windows and was well-​air-​conditioned, both nice features in a gym.
The location, though slightly less convenient than the Hyatt for my usual agenda in Cleveland, is still located in the heart of the downtown area in Playhouse Square. I would definitely stay here again!

The staff is great. Really top notch. But this hotel desperately needs to be renovated. It’s just old. Looks like it hasn’t been touched in 30 years. Also did I mention it’s in Cleveland?

Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere. As other reviewers noted, this hotel is damp and mildewy. I feel it’s unsafe as it has to be full of mold because the rooms smell awful. Everything… sheets, towels, my clothes… felt wet. The area is rundown and this hotel is no exception. The staff was not helpful. They liked talking to each other but not to guests. The valet service was a cluster. Things in the room (alarm clock and tv remote) were broken. The room service food was terrible. It is the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had and I travel a lot. I’d give it zero stars if I could. The whole hotel needs to be gutted and rebuilt and the entire staff needs to be trained.

This was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had. It feels like a 2 start hotel trying to act classy. The best thing I can say is that the first valet we talked to was very friendly and professional… and the valets are part of a different company, not Wyndham employees.
The staff is straight up rude. One of the first experiences we had was riding the (painfully slow) elevator with three employees. We were clearly interrupting their fun. The only acknowledgment of our presence was that they attempted to hold down the laughter and just mouthed jokes to each other. It was a really awkward ride to the 12^th floor. We ran into one of those employees later getting off the elevator. We had to step back in to let him get on before we got out. Seriously? That’s just bad manners. Whether or not the person getting off the elevator is a guest, you let them off first.
We specifically booked that hotel because it had a pool and hot tub. When we arrived, the hot tub was being renovated and the pool was unheated. I wanted to register my disappointment with the front desk staff. I suggested that they put the fact that the hot tub is currently a pile of rubble on the website. The woman behind the desk (who was not even the employee I was trying to talk to!) actually cut me off to say that it was on the website. When I tried to suggest that it might not have been up when I booked our room, she interrupted me again to say it had been up there two months. I did go back and look at the mobile site and couldn’t find any mention of the hot tub being closed.
Our room was pretty sub-​par. The curtains didn’t close all the way so there was no way to make the room completely dark. There were little holes in the wall and a bright red stain on the carpet. The bed was like a marshmallow! My husband and I both woke up with back pain. The shower head was rusty and the drain was clogged so by the time I finished my shower, the water was up to my shins. The hairdryer didn’t work so I called guest services and asked for a new one. After waiting 20 minutes, I called again. Ten minutes after that, the (dirty) replacement hair dryer arrived.
By that point we were just laughing in a, «how can this place get any worse?» kind of way. I would never go back to this hotel. This was our first experience with Wyndham and I think, just to be on the safe side, I’ll steer clear of the brand.

Man, this place wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the mildew-​y, damp, humid and wetness this place exhumes. It’s a shame as its in a wonderful area, other than all the decrepit abandoned buildings that surround it. Apparently, they just finished washing the carpets but the smell of mildew and mold was overwhelming even in the room. When I got into my bed it felt damp and really disgusted me. I also keep coughing which may or may not be a side effect of the hotel. When I spoke to the front desk, they were completely oblivious to the damp, humid, moldy smell that permeated the air. I found that hard to believe. The smell extended into the street and was very apparent as you walked past many of the abandoned buildings adjacent and surrounding the historic district. Can’t really blame that on the hotel but still, it’s not pleasant.
Additionally, there was no coffee set out at 6:30am when I left. That was a bummer
The valet is super nice, big ups to them.
There is a great grocery store around the corner too.
Beware of the homeless. They hit you up for money at all times of the day (outside of the hotel of course)
The bar downstairs sucked. They were playing the song «Let it go» from the movie Frozen. The bartender seemed might eager to get us out even when additional people showed up way before last call. It just wasn’t very welcoming.
I don’t enjoy giving bad reviews but when warranted, it’s necessary to advise other travelers. I’d avoid this place and stay elsewhere. If you’re here to see a play, try something a walk away, America needs to lose some weight anyway. Mother-​fers can’t even walk 5 blocks now-​a-​days.

I loved the people who worked the valet. Sweet, conversational and accommodating. At bar and restaurant, really slow service, and the manager refused my friend who wanted filtered water in our water bottles. He claimed that «it was all from the tap» and «we could buy water bottles» — we knew differently from the night before at the bar. He might’ve thought «why aren’t they buying lunch»? Little did he know we spent enough at the bar last night to make the difference. In a time when plastic bottles over populate our planet I don’t feel that it’s «cheap» to recycle them. On a positive note, I loved the pillows on the beds.

The Wyndham is a bit tired, but it’s in a great location both for the entertainment district (about four blocks) and the theater district (right in the middle of it.) Also a good choice for Cleveland State (about ten blocks.) Garage parking behind and across the street. Nice bar. So-​so restaurant. Excellent beds. We were there on a Saturday and unfortunately there was a large wedding party, some of whom must have been in the room beneath ours, so we had some noise issues at closing time from what sounded like several young drunk men finishing up their evening.

The only reason I gave this two stars instead of one is because they have comfortable beds and one woman at the front desk was very friendly and understanding.
First off, we arrived there with two rooms booked and they said we had four rooms booked… after we had called and confirmed our reservation twice. Then the guy at the front desk asked if I minded having a room without a bathtub (just a normal shower). I said that was fine, until I got to the room and realized it was a handicap room, which usually isn’t a big deal but the toilet flush wasn’t working (had to fix it on my own) and the whole bathroom was dirty. I could see the stickiness on the floor in the standup shower, which looked like something from summer camp. After ten minutes in the room I went down to ask if I could switch because it was dirty and uncomfortable, and they said that wasn’t possible the hotel was sold out… didn’t he just tell us we had four rooms booked (meaning, there should be at least two extra rooms available)?
The next day, we were at a conference all day and when we arrived back to the hotel, ALL of my things were moved out of my room without my knowledge. They apologized and said they were renovating, but i was furious to say the least. They knew they would be renovating when we checked in, why would they not inform me that I’d have to change rooms? Instead a stranger moved all of my things without my knowledge. The front desk woman was kind enough to explain and buy me a drink and app at the mediocre hotel lounge, but still it was not okay.
Lastly, I woke up the next morning with a parking violation bill slipped under my door from the hotel. I DIDN’T EVEN HAVE A CAR THERE!
The second room was nice, but they need to get their customer service together if they want to have a lasting business. I’d suggest staying at the Westin instead, where our conference was that looked way more put together.

Spent the night. The receptionist was rude and couldn’t care lee that we were here. Poor attitude and lots of repairs needed. We spent time at other Wyndham hotels. They were first rate and dedicated employees. Something is wrong here? I doubt we will be back soon.

My husband checked in for a week long stay and was immediately hit by a strong sewage stench that permeated his room. He requested for a room change, but was told that nothing was available. He asked them to please move him as soon as something opened up. The next day, he attempted to move to a different room once again, but was told that there was still nothing available for him.
Out of curiosity, he called the reservations line and they offered him a room of the same size and length of stay easily. Knowing this, he went downstairs and asked again if they were sure nothing was available. Once more, they told him no. He then revealed to the front desk person that he was about to make a reservation over the phone and obviously something was available. Flustered, the employee stated that there must have been a communication error with headquarters and still refused to move him.
I then called reservations myself, and was able to book a room. I was then transferred to customer service and told her of his situation. She stated, «If they told him they don’t have a room available, I don’t know what you want me to do about it.» I explained to her that obviously something was available if they were going to book me a room and she reluctantly called the hotel and sorted things out with Amanda.
Amanda then «assisted» my husband with his room change with a poor attitude. Based on this terrible experience and lack of customer care, we will never be staying at another Wyndham again.

I was a bit nervous booking a room at this hotel with all of the bad reviews, but overall, my husband and I had a great winter get-​away weekend.
If you’re heading to Cleveland now through March, definitely take advantage of the «Snow News is Good News» special — which is only available through booking online — don’t call and ask the hotel about it — all they’ll say is it’s an online deal and they can’t book the room for you. You pay the standard rate for the first night and then the second night is determined by how cold it is outside! This is a great special, granted the price does go up significantly after the service fees and taxes, but still a great deal for staying downtown. For 2 nights on a weekend in December, we paid a total of $ 175.
I’m going to start with my complaints — which for my experience are not lengthy.
Customer Service over the phone—
Why does the phone have to ring 15 times before somebody answers? Multiple times, I had to let the phone ring and ring, hang up, and then call again before I could could somebody on the phone. Yet, when we were in the hotel, I always saw somebody behind the counter… makes me want to say «MOM, THE MEATLOAF! What is she doing? I never know what she’s doing back there…»
The Hot Tub—
It’s true, my friends — the hot tub is TOO HOT. A couple minutes will warm you right up, then you’ll be ready to get out.
Parking—
Yes, the valet parking is expensive, but I have an alternative plan that is much cheaper! Park in the Halle building parking garage, which is right behind the hotel. It’s $ 9/​night, as opposed to $ 20/​night through the hotel’s valet. We were told to ask for an «A» permit — everything worked out just fine and no dents or vandalism to worry about. Easy walk to the hotel too.
Breakfast—
$ 15/​person for the breakfast buffet is just way too much for us, so we scoped out some cute local breakfast cafes. Our favorites: The Luncheonette in the 4^th street Arcades and Phuel Café, which is a new café right in front of the glittering chandelier. Check out my reviews on them for more info! Both are affordable and offer delicious breakfast options — Phuel is more eclectic, while The Luncheonette is your typical home style diner. There’s another place called the Huron Deli, but we didn’t make it to that one.
As for the good–
Our room was great — clean, comfortable, and had a decent view of Playhouse Square. I thought the bed was incredibly comfy and had no trouble sleeping at all. This means alot coming from me because I am the WORLD’s lightest sleeper. The room has to be pitch black, the pillow has to be fluffy enough, and I have to have white noise on all night. You can turn the fan on, which worked out just fine. It did take some time to get the hot water going in the shower, but I’ve experienced that at other city hotels. I had the time to wait, so it didn’t bother me. Wifi was free and worked fine for us too.
The service was fine person to person… still don’t know what the issue is with picking up the phone!
We didn’t try the restaurant because there are so many other great places to try in the area!
Overall a nice stay — I recommend Wyndham for a get away weekend! And take advantage of their winter special!

Protip: free lobby coffee ends @ 8:30 AM. After that, they’re more than happy to sell you a cup of Joe for $ 2.00! Good thing there’s a Starbucks nearby. Frankly, next time I need to stay in the Playhouse zone I’ll choose Holiday Inn Express…
