Only ate here twice… first time I got food poisoning and the second time I decided to try it one more time and some friends and I broke out in horrible hives after we ate.

Good food, served quickly, by friendly people. In an ordinary building along NC55, lies a gem called Ma’s Diner. I arrived too late for breakfast, so I ordered a burger. Although I wasn’t asked how I wanted it cooked, I was asked what I wanted on it. That was different. I was encouraged. I also ordered onion rings. The burger was good. It was tender and cooked just right. The bun didn’t get soggy. There is a whole lot of burger in these burgers. Be hungry. The surprise continued with the onion rings. Real onions, lightly battered and hot. That too was a positive change from the typical barely warm, fried onion-flavored breading. And all of that, plus a drink, was way under ten bucks. There’s a small whiteboard with the daily specials for entrée, soup, and dessert. There’s also a list of 6 or 7 available sides that may or may not, change daily. I didn’t see any menus, so I guess most people who come in either know what they want, or order off the whiteboard. Like most small town diners, there’s no frills here. It’s more of a community center, I think, based on the number of people who were just hanging out drinking coffee or sweet tea.

Ma’s grill is what it is: A place to get excellent food at a great price. Their burgers are made from real meat, which I can’t say for the local McDonalds. A double cheeseburger(weighing at a ½ lb plus) with all the fixin’s(including cheese and chili) will set you back about six bucks, with onion rings. Sweet tea comes to you by the pitcher, and the waitstaff always remembers you, and what you order. My last visit was over a year ago, and when one of my friends ordered, they remembered that I take tea…10 mins before I arrived. It’s worth a detour to visit. Booths, tables, whatever… you’ll be sitting with the locals, and that’s not a bad thing. The TV in back is tuned to your favorite soap opera(or the afternoon news cast, depending on the time of day). My last offering was the grilled cheese and vegetable soup(under six). Get here, get full, and get some down home food with great service. I’m a fan… and I love every minute I’m here.
