cool ships, I felt happy when I saw them. I wanted to go on one of them, but I couldn’t. I was to happy to ask them if I could go on the boat + I dont speak Dutch.

Lydia L. is quite right — these tall ships are quite awesome. I saw the reproductions of Henry Hudson’s fleet when they sailed up the Hudson River in July, and they drew quite a crowd. The ships are beautiful reproductions that have been crafted with care. It’s quite something to see them sailing slowly along the river — West Point gave them a gun salute as they sailed on by — and it’s both inspiring and overwhelming to think that Henry Hudson and crew actually crossed the ocean on ships like this. Kudos to those who are sharing these ships with us, as well as to the people who are caring for them and are making them available to the people of Putnam County.

For my 100th firstie review I knew I had to wait for the perfect opportunity and today I found it. Rather it found me. While Scooping the Loop, The L. and I came across a very unusual and colorful sight at the waterfront gazebo bandstand. As part of the Hudson River Quadricentenial, 20 historic wooden ships are visiting for the day in Cold Spring at the waterfront as part of their 3 week journey commemorating Henry Hudson’s journey. It is quite a spectacular sight and truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to see such magnificent ships up close and talk with the people who are in charge of them, many of them owners. They were brought over by freighter just for this event. There are lowslung skutsjes, fishing boats and barges ranging in size from a modest sized day sailer type to a 10 meter long rowing boat to giants 15 meters plus in size. The craftsmanship of the wood, metal and glass is so beautiful! Most of the boats are either from the late 19th century/early 20th century or mindful reproductions from more recent times. None are actually 400 years old! But each one is so unique and different they are certainly one of a kind and made with extreme attention to the finest quality. How nice of the Dutch to share a part of their nautical heritage with us in our marking of this historic occasion! Dank u wel!
