Cape Royale Golf Course

The course was overall in just horrible condition. There was no part of this course that was manicured as it should have been. More than once I asked my husband, «is this my tee box»? I just couldn’t tell… some tee boxes had a colored stand-​up marker, and some did not. Above all else, they just weren’t groomed — it was hard to tell where the edge of the tee box was!
The fairways were just as bad. One would think you could find your ball on the fairway off of the drive when you clearly saw where it landed, but honestly the clover was so think and tall, sometimes we’d spend 4 or 5 minutes combing through all the clover to no avail. It was very frustrating. And don’t even think about finding anything in the rough. And if the clover didn’t eat your ball, then you get to take your fairway shot off weed infested grass or no grass at all — just hardpan dirt patches.
There were a couple of holes on the back nine that are lakefront, and are very scenic. But the amount of timber and trash that washes up on the shore isn’t cleared away — it’s just left there, looking like a big pile of trash. I wouldn’t suggest looking for a wayward ball in that area either — there are now signs that say «watch out for snakes».
The greens… what greens!!! They are so poorly conditioned and groomed that we finally just started taking a gimmee if we were within a foot of the pin.
If this course were in any kind of decent shape, we’d think about coming back. But seeing as how other reviewers from more than a year ago are having the same complaints, it’s not likely to change any time soon — so no, we won’t be back. I did give this course at least one star, but only because the young lady that worked the counter was extremely helpful and pleasant, and hooked us up with a cooler and was able to find a Shiner when she said they were out.

I’m sure the course will get better (hopefully) condition-​wise as the summer draws near, but this time it was just horrible. The greens were horrible. The fairways were horrible. The tee boxes were okay. All of this could be somewhat overlooked if they didn’t charge $ 45 for a green fee and cart. I wish courses would give a discounted price when they know their course is not in the best shape it can be.
And the greens! Yes, they were badly maintained, but they are also the most unfair greens you will ever play. And depending on where they have the pins, it can be downright unplayable as you will constantly be having your ball ROLL OFF THE GREEN after almost coming to a stop near the hole.
Some of the views are really nice, however, as you can get good pictures of your playing partners with Lake Livingston in the background.
So, in summary, if they charged approximately $ 30 to play this course, it would be a good value. At $ 45, it is a complete rip off.
We only play here when we visit and camp at our property in Onalaska. This is about a 25-​minute drive, which is really convenient if you’re just looking to get away, drink some beer, and play some golf with your friends and family. For this reason alone, I almost gave it 3 stars. The condition of the course the most recent time there is why I only gave it 2 stars.
