Very decent steak sandwich take-out. I also am a big fan of the chicken steak sandwich. Load that puppy up with cheez whiz and put it in my mouth! Service was fast(I guess because I was the only one there) and and helpful.

I’ll admit, I didn’t understand cheesesteaks. Where I’m from, burritos are the quintessential drunk food. I got a cheesesteak from Philadelphia Cheesesteak Factory after a night out in G-town, and I kind of thought it sucked. However, I have been converted. South Street Steaks, you have shown me the light. I was sent here after a couple of coworkers assured me that SSS was the bomb, and they were right. I was educated on the Amoroso roll and the importance of Cheez Whiz. And I enjoyed it so much, I literally went back the next day for another. I am jonesing for one like, right now. To all the East Coasters who I used to mock because I didn’t think they’d know decent drunk food if it crapped in their lap, I am sorry. I totally get it now. But I don’t want a cheesesteak from anywhere but SSS.

So I’m not from Philly. I don’t have an allegiance to Geno’s or Pat’s. I’ve never even been to Geno’s or Pat’s, because I hate waiting in line. So I’ll just say that in my limited experience, SSS is damn good. The rolls are nice and crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The meat is tender and juicy but not overly fatty. And they’re really generous with the Whiz(you can order Provolone or American if neon-colored oil cheese scares you, but come on. Man up!) The fries are nice and crispy and the soda in the self-serve machine is not flat and syrupy as it is at so many other bargain places. For those who aren’t into cheesesteaks, SSS has a full menu of sandwiches — er, I mean, «hoagies» with chicken, deli meat, or veggies.

This place is the real deal! It’s hard to find a decent Steak and cheese outside of Philly, but this place meets the criteria, including the all important Whiz. Served right out of the 2 gallon can it came in! MMMMMM that’s good eats!

Sandwich + Fries + drink = $ 10 which is pretty good around College Park these days. Food — The food is tasty but often leaves you wanting more. For those who’ve never been to Philly for a steak, this place may surprise you a bit. It’s certainly not as greasy or nearly as big as a «Philly» cheese steak from Jerry’s or some other place, but it’s pretty good. For college dudes, I think it’s a pretty bad deal b/c you’d easily need to get 2 to get full. Money Saving Tip: has $ 10 certificates for South Street for $ 3, which is essentially $ 7 off, i.e., one free steak. From time to time, they will have $ 10 certificates for $ 0.91. Check slickdeals to be notified when these become available. The South Street certificate is $ 10 off w/minimum $ 15 order. I ate here with a friend last week using aforementioned certificate: 2 steaks, 1 buffalo fry, 1 drink for $ 7.70+$ 0.91. AWESOME! 3 Stars for making real Philly steaks. Bonus star for the savings.

South Street Steaks was sent from heaven to put authentic Philly cheesesteaks in the middle of College Park. Get a buffalo chicken cheesesteak wid’ whiz. And buffalo fries, i.e. the best fries on the face of the planet(hot sauce and ranch or blue cheese). The guys who opened South Street are great. Both University of Maryland graduates, I hope they can see through their dream of franchising the place(yes, I’ve seen the Franchising & Licensing book sitting on top of the cans of Cheez Whiz). By now the guys know my order by heart. Even when I call an order in on the phone, they stop me five seconds in and do the order themselves. They even know my picky balance of whiz to hot sauce, the Yin and Yang of a perfect buffalo chicken cheesesteak. You can order the stuff on , but with the price $ 10.29 for a good meal of buffalo fries and drinks, just get off your ass and go there. And be sure to pick up a cheesesteak loyalty card. Ten cheesesteaks and you get one free. Damn is it a good feeling to get one free. UPDATE: Since it’s my birthday next week, I just remembered! Free cheesesteak on your birthday when you sign up! Sweet!

haha, props to the reviewer below for typing pretty much exactly what i was just going to say. south street steaks is probably one of the best cheesesteak places in this area hands down, except MAYBE philly cheesesteak factory’s tyson’s corner location(NOT the georgetown one). the food is great, about as close to authentic as you’ll get around here, and the place is generally clean with cool people working there. only downside is it’s not open that late, and typically takes a while if it’s packed, but good food takes time.

Leave your EZ Pass at home — You don’t need to go all the way to Philly for a quality cheesesteak. South Street made it onto Washingtonian’s Dirt Cheap Eats list( ), and rightly so. For $ 6.19, you can get a truly delicious cheesesteak with real Amoroso rolls — the same rolls that Geno uses(I’m a Pat’s fan myself). There’s seating inside, metered parking all around, and they’re open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. So roll up your sleeves and get ready for some Whiz — This is THE place in Maryland for cheesesteaks.
