BEST Indian food I’ve ever had. I live in New York City and I have yet to find a place as good as this. Incredibly friendly and helpful staff as well. I usually order chicken tikka masala and saag paneer. YUM

Friendly service. Love all their chicken dishes, not too dry. Goan fish curry is good!

I don’t come here often, but when I do? I really enjoy their food and service. Their buffet consists of the best Palak Paneer(Spinach with cheese in curry sauce) I have ever had. The rich flavor and great texture just goes so well with the jasmine rice. Their other buffet items were good too. I’ve also came here during dinner and could tell the quality of their food was noticeably better than the buffet. Palak paneer, Goat curry, samosas, and some spicy lamb dish. Their portions aren’t as big as you’d think they are but it’s all worth it because of the rich flavors. Amazing food. There’s an Asian man working there and he definitely has a unique personality. A bit odd but at the same time humorous person. And there’s another older man with glasses that works there and he is FUNNY! Makes jokes about random things, hes attentive, and respectful. This place definitely picked up their quality. Oh and their raita is still the best. Cool, fresh, tart, and refreshing! A perfect complement to any spicy dish!

Some friends and I went to this place on a Saturday evening. I had a Groupon to use so we decided to go. It was pretty empty when we initially arrived, but it filled up pretty quickly. The service was A+! The waiters were attentive and friendly. The food, I’ve had better Indian food at other places. It tasted ok, but it was a little salty for me. I tried one of my friend’s food and her food wasn’t too salty. Perhaps it was just what I ordered. I’d be willing to try it again. The service was good and the food wasn’t horrible.

A family friend wanted to introduce us to Indian food and took us here. This is where I first fell in love with Indian food and 15 years later, I still come by for the buffets! First: the buffet can’t be beat. On a weekday, you can get a full array of appetizers, sides, chutneys, main dishes and desserts for only $ 9!!!(on Saturday and Sunday, it’s $ 11 — still a real deal!) This will typically include an iceburg lettuce salad(don’t bother), chana masala, a variety of sauces such as raita, naan, a daal, a handful of veggie and cheese dishes, plus three or four meat dishes. Don’t forget to come back for some kheer and gulab jamun for dessert! My favorite meal? The Chicken Tikka Masala is probably the best I’ve had at any Indian restaurant. It’s usually available at the buffet. The lassis(both mango and regular salty) are on point. If you want a non-alcoholic authentic beverage, have one of these with your meal. If you come for dinner, the dim lighting sets the mood for a pleasant evening. Fine white tablecloths will reveal every single spill you might make, so be careful! Complimentary poppadums are served with three dips: tamarind, spicy mint chutney, and some sort of red onion chaat(see Danny C’s photo for the whole ensemble). Most main dishes come in a medium-sized metal bowl held on a stand over a candle to keep the food hot throughout the meal. Saffron or basmati rice help soak up any sauce your dish may have — order a side of naan or other traditional breads to sop up what’s left. The wait staff is extremely friendly and attentive. I feel as if there’s always one waiter whose sole job is to make sure every client in the restaurant has a FULL glass of water, a nice touch considering much Indian food(at least Stateside) can be quite salty — unfortunately Akbar is no exception here. This is a great place for an introduction to Indian food. I wouldn’t consider anything too spicy, except to those with no spice tolerance. The staff is friendly, the food is delicious and prices are fair. Definitely try it out.

These are the things that I noticed while I was here. I noticed all the art work around the restaurant was crooked. I noticed that they still have Christmas lights up draping from the dingy drop ceiling. I noticed that my salad was terrible. I noticed that all the servers are older gentlemen. I noticed theses things because it did take awhile for my food to come out. However, once the food did come I liked(not loved) the chicken tikka masala and the meat samosa. Also, the staff was nice enough. Overall decent place to eat if your in this particular strip mall. Wouldn’t go out of my way to come back.

Went here for lunch Buffet with my family. The food is not that great at all. The lamb is I was eating was kinda dry. I love the rice, and the chicken w/the meatball. I love the desert. The staff are nice and friendly.

Loved it here. I’m usually very picky with Indian food because I’ve been spoiled by my mom’s cooking but this was a great alternative! The chicken tikka masala was SOAMAZING and if you’re vegetarian definitely try the begun bharta too — just delicious.

Unilocal really needs to start opting for half stars because this actually deserves a 3.5.i rounded up because we are definitely regulars. This has become our go to take out Indian restaurant. It’s super convenient since it’s on the way home from the gym and we are rarely disappointed. We always order the chicken tikka masala and the other dish varies from time to time. The restaurant owner is super friendly and has gotten to know us which always makes for a more pleasant experience. The only reason it’s a 3.5, is because sometimes the dishes are super salty and sometimes the meat is a little drier than preferred… but all in all we always end up back for Indian take out!

Chat Papri had a sauce that was too thick. I was expecting a much lighter appetizer. The Papadam they served seemed stale. The meat was dry and not tender in the Lamb Roganjosh. Overall not great.

My favorite Indian restaurant. Best chicken curry ever, great nan, and tasty appetizers. The service can be weird-sometimes the server will stand there and watch you eat, but as long as you ignore them, it’s not a big deal. Not the nicest looking interior or exterior, but it’s clean and the food more than makes up for it.

Went here with a friend for dinner on a Sunday early evening. My experience was similar to Danielle J. They cleared off a booth for us because they think all parties of 2 want a booth rather than a table, okay no problem. Was pointed to go sit over there, ok np. Service was cold and slow by all 3 servers we had, but the worst service came with the older guy due to his mumbling. My friend tried to ask about any item to one of the younger guys and it was like he didn’t understand english and tried to get the older guy to come over, but we couldn’t understand his mumbling, so we gave up and just ordered. My friend had not had indian food before, so I ended up getting the akbar special(21.95) and she got the lamb pasanda(16.95), since I had not had anything pasanda before. They started off with the traditional papadam and 3 sauces. None of the sauces were particularly special or tasty. The green and red tasted about the same and the brown was sweet. I can’t remember the names for these, sorry. The akbar special came with a vegetable samosa, and while it wasn’t bad, the crust had signs of it being overcooked. I then got some chicken tikka masala which was not bad. I also got one piece of onion stuffed naan, which was pretty good. It also came with tandoor chicken and daal. The daal was extremely bland and not all that good. The tandoor chicken was spiced pretty well and was enjoyable, but again, nothing better or worse than the other indian places up the street. We also had rice and shared everything to make sure she got to try everything at least once. We were full and asked to get the check. Since my friend had never had Gulab Jaman, she asked if we could get that, so I was able to ask for that and they didn’t give much problem, but charged $ 4.20 for only two balls. I thought that was outrageous and overpriced compared to any other indian place I’ve ever ordered them from. I should have confronted the servers about this, but decided to just cut the losses and get out of there since they were so slow and not particularly pleasant to talk to. I’ve now been to Akbar, House of India, and Royal Taj. Royal Taj beats both of these places in both taste and especially service. Sure the weekday buffet may be the cheapest of the three, but I do not have plans to go back after this.

Ugh… Just ugh. My mother bought a groupon for this place so we went. I.WOULD.NEVER.GO.AGAIN. It’s dirty, the manager was rude… He walked us three steps toward our table and pointed to which one to go to. Really!?! The end of the booth(where ppl probably put their hand to get in/out) was visibly stained with dirt. My menu had wet remains of some sauce inside… Not like a drop, like a smear that could not be missed. It gave me the heebie-jeebies. A couple came in right behind us & I heard the woman say, «is that someone’s water glass?» I looked over & sure enough there was a used water glass on their reset table. We gave each other a glance. Service sucked… Only one of the 4 or 5 men who came to our table was friendly, the rest were robotic and cold. I watched 2 different servers do water refills at least 3 times to nearby tables and I had to ask to have mine refilled. We felt ignored. The food was actually good but everything else was so horrible that I didnt even care. My mom said the bathroom was gross. When we asked for boxes the guy brought them and literally dropped one in front of each of us, dropped the bags IN my mom’s open box and walked away. Did I mention this was horrible?

I rarely ever have Indian food, but on this super rare occasion, I was brought to Akbar for dinner and walked out with a smile on my face. Delicious, delicious, delicious! Started off with a meat samosa(comes with two)… super dry, kinda disappointed. We also had sides of garlic bread and potato bread(obviously not the actual names, but what it tasted like)… liked the garlic one better. I’m a huge fan of curry(Japanese & Thai curry, that is) so we went with a Lamb Xacutti(HIGHLYRECOMMENDED) and Chicken Keema Masala, both delicious, but not extremely spicy if that’s what you’re looking for. The entrees are served in a small pot with a candle underneath and you’re given unlimited platters of rice that go along with your entrees. I had originally thought it wouldn’t be enough, but I walked out stuffed. Service was alright. Yes, I don’t have enough Indian food to make a fair comparison to anything else(and I’m definitely not the biggest fan) but Akbar is pretty dang good.

I came here for dinner with my sister after watching a movie at United Artist at Snowden. We ordered the Meat Samosa($ 6.25), Garlic Nan($ 3.25), Mattar Paneer($ 12.95), and Mango Lassi($ 4.50). We definitely ordered a lot and even had some leftover. The meat samosa was a little dry imo but was full of ground beef. The mattar panner is made with home made cheese gently cooked with peas and spices. It was tasty with a hint of sweetness that went well with the dish. The mango lassi was certainly my favorite. It’s not too sweet and slightly tangy with a hint of tartness… simply divine.

I feel like this place deserves more stars and better reviews than it has! The food is really flavorful and the staff is friendly! My friends and I love coming here for the buffet(check out the sweet picture I added.) It is one of the better buffets I’ve been too. There’s a great variety of things you can pick from. The palak is to die for. Same with the chicken tikka masala and the biryani. I really love the chicken korma but that usually isn’t in the buffet. The rice pudding is amazing too, and the mango lassis, homemade right there at Akbar, are the best mango lassis I’ve ever had. And i’ve been to a lot of Indian restaurants! They’re a perfect blend of sweet and tart, and the consistency is just right, not too thick, not too thin. I get that Akbar may not have the fanciest of interiors, but the booths are really comfortable and the service is prompt. Most importantly the food tastes awesome and I really don’t care that the color scheme of the place might be a little bland. Sometimes it’s the random places that surprise you and this place is great.

All you can eat of a nice assortment of Indian dishes for around $ 9 a person — it doesn’t get much better than that. A friend and I came here for their lunch buffet, which to me is the only way to enjoy Indian food. Being able to partake in half a dozen dishes with all the naan and rice you stuff yourself with for less than $ 10 is the way to go. In the addition to the usuals — chicken tikka masala and tandoori, yellow dal, palak paneer and alu gobi — we were pleasantly surprised to see samosas on the buffet as well. Yum. Each of the dishes had great flavor and were well prepared despite probably being made in mass quantity. The service was great as well — our water glasses were never empty and plates were cleared almost instantly. I don’t think you can ask for much more.

Disappointing. Met up with a friend at Akbar last night and got the veggie thali. The curries were sort of lukewarm like they’d been sitting around then had been nuked. The bread was not hot and neither was the rice. The dal had a skin on top. One of the curries seemed to want to be aloo gobi but like it had a cheese sauce on it that was really foul. And the whole thing was bland. Like not just non-spicy, not even seasoned properly. The only ok thing was that gulab jamun, but that was the usual canned fare. Needless to say, I did not take my leftovers. I’ll not be eating there again. I wish I knew an actually good Indian restaurant in this area, because it seems they’ve all gone downhill, including Mango Grove, which used to be awesome but now serves food that tastes reheated and is bland.
