Simply Savory is a great little market that specializes in unique products that you’ll struggle to find anywhere else. They also have some good eats here in addition to the market. The only problem with Simply Savory comes from the cost you pay for all that uniqueness(you’ll pay handsomely.) If you can get over the sticker shock you’ll find one of the best places in town to shop for that extra something for your pantry.

Dog Fight super-fan David Hunt put us on the scent of the dogs at Simply Savory. Simply Savory is tucked away on Devine Street in the space that once housed Ben and Jerry’s. It’s a fancy little place that’s a cross between a gourmet food store, wine shop and eatery. In fact, when Dean noticed the wine tasting schedule, he wondered if we were in the right place. You can park and eat inside or pick up food to go. Simply Savory has a full deli-style lunch menu that includes salads, sandwiches and wraps. They carry Hershey’s ice cream by the scoop but the Dog Fighters had dessert Dog Fight-style. More on that later. At Simply Savory, the dogs are delivered in baskets with your choice of a side: potato salad, Zapp’s chips or Sun Chips, or pasta salad with a crisp pickle sliver on the side. If you get a hankerin’ for another dog, you can order them a la carte. There’s an NYC Dog(ketchup and mustard only), chili dog, slaw dog, kraut dog or the Wild Dog. How the Dog Fight went down. That Wild Dog was so good many of us went back for another or found a partner to share one with. Julie even shared a bite of her half with Dean, who looked very forlorn as we oohed and ahhhed our way through round two. Yes, the Wild Dog is that good. Simply Savory fresh-grills Nathan’s dogs so the wiener by itself is a treat. Snappy, meaty and tasty. Jeff found his juicy wiener grilled to perfection and delivered lingering notes of garlic and paprika. The dogs are served up on toasted buns. Amy, who enjoyed a to-go chili dog an hour after the Dog Fight, said her dog was great, cold. The Toppings Jeff found the homemade chili at Simply Savory simply awesome. Russell agreed, declaring it spicy and great. It had a wonderful texture with bold, but not overpowering, taste from nine seasonings the owner refused to divulge. Dean said the coleslaw was artful-looking yet a bit underwhelming, but it went well with the rest of the hot dog toppings. Jeff said the Wild Dog was the closest thing to perfection on a bun. Julie enthusiastically gave it a perfect score and even Tim said it was possibly one of the best hot dogs he’d ever eaten. Why? It’s a Nathans dog on a toasted bun with a little extra somethings that go like this: spicy mustard, chipotle mayo, carmelized Vidalia onions, chili and cheese. The Verdict It was a great day in Dog Fight history. The only downside was the cost. Dean said he felt like he was being taken at first. It was a hair pricy but, as we all readily agreed, at least you get something that’s worth the cost. According to Jeff, Dog Fight Director of Math and Spreadsheet Maintenance, Simply Savory scored an impressive 26.9 out of 30 with the coveted Wild Dog stealing the victory from the other very strong contenders. The bottom line? Stop whatever you are doing, drive there now and get the Wild Dog. Then bring us some more. If you want to see all reviews with pictures check out and click the Dog Fight Tab.
