Pluses: The hanging fee is extremely reasonable, considering most art galleries’ hanging fee is quite high(to off-set their costs). The uniqueness of the building the gallery is housed has original crown molding, and a decorated ceiling. The owners take as many paintings/drawings as there is wall space. Lots of color, current matters portrayed — I love it! All the art is by local artists! Each is priced by the artist, and well under what most galleries up-charge. The only bummer I’ve come across is when they have bands playing in the gallery. It is a small place, so sound vibrates and is very loud. I find it hard to listen to, simply because I don’t want to risk losing my hearing. I’m excited to hear this gallery is moving to a bigger space, over this winter!

I really like this place along with all the people that own and are volunteering here, the only few things I would change are as follows: There is no air flow, the room is extremely HOT and with no AC, and than it gets crammed full of people, but during the cold season it is great inside. Granite AC is VERY expensive, and to fill up a high ceiling brick building will be even more expensive. The bands that play inside are local musicians, sharing their talents through performance art. With the wide variety of music that comes through their it is bound you will find someone you can enjoy. Now on occasion it can be to loud to talk or even hear yourself in their. Besides that, the people are cool that work and keep this place up and running. The artist that are there are talented and fun as well. I am a local artist there that has my art hung up sometimes and sells my clothing in the front room for gallery hop. For the location and the fact that this is a legit gallery the hanging fees and commission are fair. Each month is different, and you can not control the weather or how the economy is. It is hard to sell at galleries in general because of restricted hours usually. I wish there was a way to better view the art that is hung closer to the ceiling. Sometimes the detail of some ones art is missed out because of were it is paced. With such tall walls and so many artist wanting to hang up their art it makes it challenging, almost like a giant game of tetris. There is a wide variety of art/artist to choose from inside and outside of 83 gallery, so what ever you are into I am sure you will find it in there. The art in there has a wide spread of quality and talent as well. So check out 83 Gallery and support a LOCALARTIST!

Interesting! I stopped by during the most recent Gallery Hop, while a musical performance was setting up to play a small party being held inside. Local art adorns the place, some of which are sold on T-shirts, and apparently the establishment supports numerous charities. :-) But 83 Gallery has room to grow, I think. It just didn’t «arrest» me as other galleries in the Short North do. However, its location is prime, sharing space with Mikey’s Late Night Slice. 3.5 stars, rounding down.
