We were just traveling through and wanted to check out the court house area of Columbus. Normally there are great little cafes around town centers in small Texas towns. It seems Becky’s Café is the only one there. That’s where we went and that’s where we discovered the rest of the town must go too. The café was packed. Matter of fact, there were more people there than we’d seen in the whole of the town yet. However, it was noon and we did discover several empty tables. You just seat yourself here. There’s no one to greet you and no one or even a sign posted to tell you to do that. I’m not sure we would have had to stand before someone acknowledged us so we just found a close table. It took quite some time to get a server to bring us menus or bring us drinks. Other locals were served before us. We figured they were known. Eventually, we did order and not too long afterwards our meals were delivered. We were never offered refills on our ice tea. I ordered the catfish dinner and was surprised with all the included food on the plate. It came with the catfish, cheese covered broccoli, buttered potatoes, coleslaw and cornbread. Wow! That was a lot of food. The broccoli was good but not hot. Matter of fact, it was all pretty good. I had no complaints other than the temperature of some of the items. Cole slaw was definitely delicious. My husband ordered a grilled cheese sandwich. The sandwich was good and so were the fries. However, he also added a piece of coconut cream pie to his lunch. There was so much whipping cream on it you could hardly taste any of the pie filling or even find it. Half of it was left on the table. He didn’t eat it. So, to summarize — my food was good, the service was not and neither was the pie. Thus, an average 3-star rating. My husband said he would give it 2-stars but I’m the one writing the review! There you have it!

Don’t know how the other food is, probably should’ve gotten roast beef. Special was catfish so we both got that, worst catfish we’d ever had. Chewy and cold with no flavor. Potatoes were good.

Great food at a great price. It was cute how most of the town showed up promptly at noon as though a town lunch bell had just sounded. I had the daily lunch special and it was terrific.

The food is wonderful and very inexpensive. Becky has a lunch special that changes every day that is a real deal which is 2 to choose from 2 sides and a roll or cornbread plus a whole menu They do breakfast and lunch, no dinner hours. It’s good home food cooking that is a must try.

I am disappointed to be writing this review. My husband and I prefer to support local businesses but this is one we’ll be passing on from now on. We’ve been to the restaurant twice, the last time this past Saturday morning for breakfast(10÷26÷13). We had a family member visiting from out of town so we decided to pop in for breakfast. Our waitress pretty much ignored us — we had to stand up and ask a passing lady(the owner I think!) for coffee. During this time, our waitress walked by our table several times delivering food to other tables but never would even make eye contact with us — it was unbelievable. She also spent a lot of time leaning on the counter up where the food comes out from the kitchen. The owner mentioned something to the waitress and she got PO’d — I know she did because when she delivered our food(which took WAY too long to come out) she was very rude. Food was mediocore at best as well. Again, so disappointed … you can easily tell the difference being being busy and overwhelmed and being flat out rude, and this was definitely deliberate rudeness. This business would be much better served if they’d evaluate their wait staff and keep only those that care and act like they really want to be there.

My wife and I took a day trip to the Columbus area. We asked some locals where to get some lunch and they both said Becky’s Café. The café looks very small from the outside, but when you go in you’ll see it’s a pretty good size place. The waitress took our drink orders of ice tea. The tea didn’t taste very good. It tasted old or the tea brewer hadn’t been cleaned. When we asked for lunch recommendations our waitress said«everything’s good.» That didn’t help much. Looking at the menu you basically have a choice of a hamburger, sandwich, chicken fried steak, or the daily special. I ordered the chicken fried steak with onion rings and a salad for about $ 8. My wife ordered the daily special which was a fried pork chop with okra/tomatoes, and mac/cheese. I think it was about $ 7. The food came out all at once. Our salads weren’t given to us first. Most establishments will serve the salads first while the entrée is cooking. Everything was put down on our small table. We were sitting in a small two-seater table next to the wall, so things were really cramped. We managed to organize our plates the best we could to give us what little room we had. Either way, don’t sit in the two person table next to the wall. My chicken fried steak was pretty good. There were two tenderized cutlets about 6oz each. There wasn’t much seasoning in the crust, but a couple shakes of salt and pepper made it better. The number one thing I liked about the chicken fried steak was the fact the crust didn’t fall off the meat when you cut into it. It shows they know how to batter and cook a cfs. The meat wasn’t the most tender I’ve had, but it did cut easily with my knife. My onion rings were so so. They too had no taste to them. Most of the crust fell off the onion ring when I bit into it. They probably needed a minute more in the fryer, because they weren’t very crispy. My wife’s pork chop wasn’t the greatest. She thought it was ok, but I thought it had a funny old taste. She loves okra/tomatoes and these were good. She wasn’t impressed with the mac/cheese. As we were finishing our meal, our waitress gave us the bill without asking if we wanted anything else. We told her we wanted one piece of buttermilk pie. The waitress brought out our pie while WE moved our dirty lunch plates and salad bowls to the center of this small table. She never attempted to pick up our dirty dishes/bowls! How can one stand there looking at our table full of dirty dishes and not remove them? So, we had the pie sitting between us on the edge of the table being careful not to knock the plate onto the floor. The pie was pretty good and we saw several people getting pieces of the different cream pies. I think one piece of pie costs $ 2.75. Overall, I would say Becky’s Café is so so. We did see other diners with hamburgers and they looked good. However, the service isn’t very good. The food is reasonably priced, but limited. We probably won’t go back mainly because of the service and the limited menu.

Living in the«big city» you get used to spending $ 10+ on a full breakfast unless you’re hangin’ at Denny’s/Jim’s/IHOP which I have no complaints with. When I go back home to visit the family I look forward to small town good eatin’ on the cheap. At Becky’s I always order the 2 eggs, choice of meat(you gotta get the pan sausage, although the bacon is some of the best too), grits or hashbrowns, homemade biscuits or grilled homemade bread(geez, the drool is returning) all for $ 4.95! Meats are from the local meat market and the biscuits are the size of a cat’s head. Lunch specials are around $ 5 for a meat, 2 sides and rolls. Top it off with a slice of one of several homemade pies. You’ll find all the locals here drinking coffee and catching up, hunters en route to their leases, the after church crowd, you name it. Super casual so everyone is always welcome. Go there once and you’ll already be a regular.

Great place to get breakfast or lunch if you are in Columbus. They are only open till 2pm so you will need to get dinner elsewhere. The Café isn’t much to look at but at least it was clean. The daily specials are written on a board next to the front door. Lots of home cooking style specials to choose from. I had the burger and onion rings. The burger was very good. The bread was fresh as well as the lettuce, onion and tomato. The onion rings were fantastic. They make them in house and were hot, fresh and not greasy. My wife had the open face roast beef sandwich served on a slice of their homemade bread, so I got to try that as well. The roast beef was fork tender and one of the best that I have every tasted. The roast beef was topped with a brown gravy that was great for dipping your fries in. Service was the only issue. Our waitress was very friendly but must have been related to Harry Houdini as she had the disappearing act down to an art. We never got a refill on our drinks. She also dropped off the check when she delivered our food and was never seen again. Prices are reasonable, a great lunch and drink will cost you less than 10 dollars and you will leave feeling very satisfied. Next time I’m in Columbus will be going back to Becky’s Café to try another lunch special.

So I’m from Columbus… born and raised. Beckys is all that the previous review states and more. Beckys is my boyfriends favorite restaurant… he’s also from Columbus. Really it’s not that great… it’s cheap home cooking made when you order it. And since we go basically everyday that we are home I order depending on who’s cooking. We usually go for breakfast, coffee is really good have to admit:) prices are super cheap and they have all gone up. As the previous review states the omlette was nothing to write home about I agree if you don’t add any veggies. Make sure you add veggies otherwise it’s just cheese and meat. If you go the best cooks are Becky and Linda, Becky is the owner not the lady who owns keysers. So if Becky or Linda are cooking it will all be good cheap home cooking. All the food is good and service is just fine for what it is. And the place that it is located in has been several businesses throughout the years… I took gymnastics there twenty one years ago.

Though my family has had a ranch near Columbus for fifty years, we rarely end up eating in town because a) generally we cook during our trips there and b) many places aren’t open on the weekends. During a recent trip up to the ranch to make some improvements, my dad ended up stumbling across Beckey’s Café, and as it turned out, they’re also open on the weekends, but only for breakfast and lunch. During the MS-150 weekend where I ran support for my sister, we ended up eating at Beckey’s twice, once on Saturday for lunch, once on Sunday for breakfast. First off, it’s not exactly a fancy place. There are folksy, homespun odds and ends on the walls including a plaque that states«Texas: It’s Not For Amateurs» and a John Wayne painting. Service is brisk, though efficient. The linoleum floors and fluorescent lighting may bring to mind more images of «cafeteria» than«café», but all is forgiven once you tuck into whatever you’ve ordered. For lunch, I ordered a club sandwich with onion rings($ 8). The mountain of food I received was completely surprising – it took a few minutes just to drill down far enough to pick up a portion of my sandwich. Bread was grilled, bacon was thick, and the sammich was all-around delicious. I’d venture to say that the onion rings were the best I’ve ever had. EVER. I conquered half of the plate and then passed it along to my uncle, who finished it off. For breakfast, I ordered an omelette with cheese and bacon, which came with my choice of grits or hash browns(I chose the latter) and biscuits or toast(the correct answer is «biscuits»). Omelette was decent and filled with crumbles of the same thick, hearty bacon I encountered in my club sandwich. The hash browns weren’t anything to write home about and its portion was skimpy, but the biscuits were fluffy, amazing and made in the restaurant. Paired with a pat of blackberry jam, it was heavenly. One of the waitresses(and possibly owner?) here is married to the fellow who runs Keyser’s Meat Market, Columbus’ local butcher, and it’s obvious that they use some of Keyser’s meat in the restaurant. My dad let me have half of his sausage patty in exchange for half a biscuit, and I think I got the better half of the deal. The meat is so fresh I was expecting it to moo, and it tasted like beefy heaven. Definitely check out Beckey’s when you’re en route to Austin, San Antonio, Houston, or wherever you’re traveling. It’s the kind of small town good eats that you can’t get in the big city.
