Love Bierberg — I’ve been there 3 times just this season! I can’t even begin to list the wonderful cookies that lie within a $ 16 pound assortment from Bierberg. Some favorites of mine are the marzipan and Wilhelmson(petit fores). I also love the star cookies and crescents dipped in yogurt — a buttery, flakey, crumbly delight! The experience at Bierberg is always wonderful. You can pick out an assortment of whatever delicious little goodies you would like, as the bakers give you a tour du cookies, describing each tin. Bierberg is quickly turning into a holiday tradition — after today’s visit I’ve got a box for me and a box for family on Christmas!

We have been customers since the mid 60’s. They are basically open from the week of Thanksgiving through December. No holiday celebration is complete without a box of Bierberg’s cookies. They will pack a box of your own choices, but until you have favorite cookies they also have 1 lb boxes already packed each day for«quick pick up». My favorites are the Vanilla Sticks… so save those for me.

I have driven by this little bakery in the past, but it had never looked open. To my surprise, Columbus Alive helped me understand that this bakery usually isn’t open. After reading the article, I knew I had to try them out, and what a great decision that was! When we arrived, the little room was packed with other patrons waiting patiently for our boxes of cookies. When it was finally our turn, it was a little overwhelming, but we were able to make our decisions. I think there had to be at least 20 different kinds of cookies to choose from. All I can say is that we must have picked right, because we went on Saturday, and there are only crumbs in the box today and it is Tuesday(granted, there are 5 people who live in my house). Anyway, you can tell these cookies are made with love just by looking into the kitchen and watching them bake and enjoy each others company while making delicious cookies. As you bite into each individual cookie you can taste the quality of ingredients that they use. FYI: If you choose to go, make sure you have cash or a check to pay!!!

Bierberg Backerei(Bakery) is a sweet little holiday that’s pushing it’s way to «tradition» for our Decembers. They’re not open to the public, at least not until November and December, when they continue their practice of four generations of bakers, baking a wide variety of traditional(I presume) German cookies. That’s it – just cookies. Well, maybe a little fruitcake. But they do steady business, even when we visited this Wednesday afternoon. $ 16 buys a pound box, either a pre-selected variety or your own choice. And the cookies? Wunderbar! See you next year.

It’s probably a good thing for my waistline that Bierberg Bakery is only open two months out of the year. This shop has been making Christmas cookies since 1913, and it has pretty much changed my life. First of all, I live only a few houses away from here, which makes me happier than you can imagine. Walking in to the tiny store from idyllic brick streets in glorious German Village reaffirms my decision to move to this area of Columbus. Inside, it smells just like my great-grandmother’s kitchen, where baked goods were equated with love. You can buy the little morsels of comfort and joy for $ 16 per pound. Considering everything that goes into each cookie and the history behind this little bakery, $ 16 is a steal, because the entire experience is priceless. Most of the cookies are small, hard German varieties, meant to be consumed with coffee or tea. Think festive, old world biscotti. One of the family or friends of Bierberg will take you on a ‘cookie tour’ of each variety in it’s tin container. I wanted to try them all. I would never have considered buying my Christmas cookies for the season, but now I think I’ll let my mixer and ovens rest and partake in these little Christmas miracles instead. Truly, no other bakery in town can offer as much thought, care, and tradition to rival a homemade batch the way Bierberg can. Take a peek into the kitchen if you can… So cute! Don’t forget the ‘quality control’ bowl on your way out, either. Bierberg Bakery makes me want to sing ‘Fa-la-la-la!’ all day long!
