This is actually a tae kwon do dojang. Grandmaster Yang, the founder of the school, was the first tae kwon do instructor in Columbus and has been here for 30+ years. I am honored and fortunate to have been his student. Grandmaster Yang also teaches classes at the local YMCA chapters, but once students are of rank(green belt), they are expected to begin taking lessons at the dojang. After they attain red belt status, they are expected to move to the dojang exclusively for more advanced lessons. The style he teaches is the traditional ji do kwan style and he does not believe in competition. Students can begin learning at age six. Emphasis is on self-defense, honor, and respect. To learn at the dojang, you must pay a monthly membership fee, as well as for your uniform and all testing. All told, it is expensive, with 9th dan(final degree of black belt in this style) being the most expensive test. Once you have completed all rank tests, you just have the monthly fee to worry about. All of the black belt instructors are very knowledgeable and are excellent teachers. Grandmaster Yang works with students as well, rotating between belt ranks. He does not pick favorites, but if you show promise, he will drill you into the ground. The dojang is not air conditioned and the room is very small. If can get really warm and really crowded, so plan accordingly and ask questions. Ladies, wear a gym shirt and a sports bra under your dobak(uniform). Trust me on this. Gents, you might want to wear a cup, especially since most of the students are kids that tend to punch and kick at groin-height(they don’t do that on purpose, but things happen and you’ll want to be prepared). Parents, if you have teenagers, keep that in mind when signing your kids up.
