Sorry to see Cooper stadium fall to the wrecking ball. I am a fan of old ballparks… I have dedicated my life to my hobby of photographing as many as I can. Cooper was cool for a minor league facility. Nothing fancy, but good sightless. I was there in the fall of 1991, just after the season, and again in 97. Winter gave me some amazing shots of the old place… R.I.P job well done!

For Columbus, OH this place is decent. When the fans are into the game it can be pretty exciting. Dime a Dog night definitely brings out the crowds, but seriously, who can eat that many hot dogs in one night??? If you can eat more than three, well then, that’s just disgusting… Not in the best area of town, but hey its always fun to cheer on the hometown team and admissions are affordable –more so than a night out to watch the Bluejackets. This place would be great for a family outing — just lock your car doors and walk fast.

I’m so sad that I waited so long to visit the Columbus Clippers at Cooper Stadium. The historic(1932) baseball park will be torn down at the end of the 2008 season. In 2009, a new stadium will supposedly be ready in the Arena District for the Clippers. Still, the history of Cooper will be missed. Though any of the AAA team’s games here are a blast, the time to come is Dime a Dog night. Every Monday when the team plays at home, hot dogs are available for $.10. It’s not uncommon to see folks with boxes of them. And there’s is Leinenkugel’s on tap too! Columbus gets a lot of grief for not hosting pro teams from any of the«big three» sports. The Clippers are an asset, though, and a game is a great way to spend a summer evening.

If you can name a single players that mans this AAA affiliate to the Washington Nationals, then you are a much more adept person than I am. Fortunately, knowledge of the Columbus Clippers, or even baseball in general, is not a prerequisite to have a good time at Cooper Stadium. Columbus has more than plenty Reds and Indians to fill this stadium on principle alone, but the crowd here is generally sparse regardless. What does this mean for you, the sports fan? One of the most likeable baseball stadium experiences you’ll find in Ohio, that’s what. While its no Out ‘R Inn, the beer prices here are cheap enough that can feasibly maintain a good buzz from before you walked through the gates well into the bottom of the seventh inning without breaking the bank wide open. Every Monday is nickel hot dog night, as well, which means you’ll see plenty baseball starved fans filling the in pursuit of 3 pounds of hot dogs and a decent farmer’s tan for under five dollars. And if the team wins, all the better! If you’re even taking an active interest in what’s happening on the diamond, you’re sure to forget the reasons why this stadium is being torn down after this year, namely the seating and the bathrooms. There may not be ideal conditions at all times, but who cares? The admission is cheap, the crowd loves a good drunk and you’ve only got one year left to soak it all in. I’d get there while the gettin’ is still good!
