My ophthalmologist sent me here after seeing that my optic nerves looked swollen. They made an appointment for me to come in the following Wednesday. I read all of the paperwork prior to my appointment. The appointment was going to take 2 – 3 hours and could cost around $ 500. I wasn’t particularly happy about either of these things, but knew what my doctor saw could be a pretty substantial problem, and headed in. I was impressed with the staff and the personal attention I received. I did a lot of waiting, but I know that’s because the staff was taking their time with other patients. There were plenty of magazines(although only a couple were recent — some were from the 80’s!) It looked like Dr. Epstein had decorated the office in what I assume was his son’s artwork. The nurse I had was very nice and walked through my eye history with me in great detail — she really wanted to know everything I’d been through with my eyes. She was sweet and understanding. I had been having some headaches that I thought might be related to my vision, and they were very concerned and thorough about understanding when they started, what type of headaches they were, etc. I did a few tests, including a field of vision test to measure my peripheral vision. It was a lot more difficult than I anticipated! Eventually, I saw Dr. Epstein himself. After dilating my eyes and looking at them, he determined that my optic nerves were elevated, not swollen, which could be perfectly normal for me. He said that he could do an MRI and a spinal tap, but both would probably be unnecessary. I appreciated that there wasn’t more work done than I most likely needed. My experience with Dr. Epstein could have been really scary, but it wasn’t. My experience was about as pleasant as a 3 hour appointment could be. I don’t have any complaints(although getting that bill probably won’t be fun!)
