Most people wouldn’t know this but Camp Chase was a training camp for Union soldiers and a prison camp for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Thousands of men including four future presidents: Johnson, Hayes, Garfield, and McKinley. passed through this facility during the war. Its location? You and I would call it the The Hilltop or more specifically, Westgate. Artist Curtis Goldstein completed the Heroes of Camp Chase mural in 2009 to honor those men on both sides of the struggle. This mural pays tribute to the history of this facility and to the soldiers who were connected with it. Just the sheer size of it alone, about 25 feet tall by 75 feet wide, makes it one of the largest pieces of art in Central Ohio. Consider it to be one of those quirky, off the radar, local things to see in the Columbus metro area. It’s free to visit and it’s located in Westgate Park, Just enter from the S. Westgate Avenue entrance. You can’t miss it.
