The Jeffrey Mansion is such a gem in the community of Bexley! The building itself is a historical former-home currently used for parks and rec programs, a few city offices upstairs, and can be rented for events. It used to be dry, but they now have a liquor license, which makes it very appealing for small to mid-sized parties. It is otherwise open to the public, and as you approach the grounds behind the edifice, you’ll find yourself in gorgeous tiered gardens with hidden stone staircases, tunnels, and hedges. There are charming places to sit or play with your family. Further back, as you make your way down one staircase or another, you’ll find yourself in a large open field bordered by woods with trails that lead to Alum Creek. At one end of the open field is a swing set, tennis courts, a pickle ball court, and picnic tables. At the other end is a pretty elaborate playground with a separate fenced-in area for the youngest kids, as well as a shelter house that can also be reserved for events.

Back in 1905, industrialist Robert H. Jeffrey and his wife Mary lived in this single family home known as the Jeffrey Mansion. The 32 acres was then donated to the city of Bexley in 1941. Today this historic area offers recreations, sports, swimming pools, tennis courts, cultural and arts education programs. As well as providing a special events space for the community. Inside the mansion on the first floor was the living space, the second floor was the bedrooms and the third was dedicated to the servant quarters. The basement was their shooting range. Just some facts from back in 1908. Bexley was named after a meeting in a village that included the area of Livingston Avenue and Town Street, but excluded a small community that was further north which was Jeffrey. Jeffrey was too small to be incorporated, so their civic leaders talked with the Pleasant Ridge Association. During that summer of 1908, both these groups met on the terrace of the Jeffrey Mansion and then agreed to join forces. At this meeting Colonel Kilbourne named this village Bexley. So as you can see this area has a lot of history and that’s why it’s so important to the city of Bexley. Everytime I come here I enjoy every gathering. I usually come for cookouts since that’s all my friends ever do here. Besides walking on the arboretum path. This place is just so lovely and I really love historic landmarks like this. I recommend it to anybody who is looking to take their kids to a play ground area, outdoor grilling, playing tennis on the courts, swimming or just need a lovely view for a special occasion.
