The Franklinton Cemetery was one of the oldest ones in our city. It is upsetting to see that many of the graves have been long forgotten. You quickly realize that it was established on or around 1799! 214 years to date. Many of the graves have deteriorated, family of the deceased have died or been forgotten — and then of course vandalism. At one point, you can tell someone broke the graves. Pretty disrespectful if I may say. However, all hope is not forgotten! I noticed the big monument from the 1930s! A dedication that these local people are not forgotten. You will see that in the middle of the cemetery. Then to the right, you have a commemorative sign informing you about the history of the grave site, and also commemorative bricks with all the people buried there(DOB and DOD). There’s a rose bush in the upper left. You will notice that there are some people in the community that have truly re-ordered the grave stones for these people. Unfortunately, I don’t believe the city will replace all of the lost ones. Whenever we go to view the history of the cementary, my dog loves to run. It’s a quite place to go to think about these people how the fought for our freedom and to found our city. I wish in the future that the city and our citizen will take action to revitalize the cemetery.

I was bummed by how this place was left to fall apart. This cemetery was established in 1799. 1799! There are veterans of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War buried here. But now it just seems forgotten.
