I have visited Powerhouse Brewing several times driving through Columbus. I didn’t know until my 5th visit it was also called the Columbus Bar, or is it, or are they one of the same? I have always known it as Powerhouse Brewing. Both names are found on the front glass doors? Maybe they want to remain mysterious? Signage is sparse, I like it, mysterious is good, it gives me something to ponder, am I in a speakeasy, is this a dive bar, a tavern, what is this place? On the other hand, its driving me a little crazy. Despite this mystery, when I am here I always order the Diesel Oil Stout. Always on Nitro when available. Smooth, dark, delicious, and a perfect interlude to my meal. My menu choice is also always the same. For $ 8.00(a steal) I get the Ahi Tuna Sandwich or as my friends and I call it – «The Sushi Sandwich». This sushi grade tuna gets lightly seared both sides, topped with Wasabi mayonnaise, served on a fresh whole wheat bun. I could probably order something else at some point, everyone always enjoys their food selections, but I am pretty sold on the Ahi. It’s a great sandwich and I typically don’t like sandwiches. Service is always great here, dressings are homemade, they have pretzel buns, the beer selection always rotates(their own offerings & guest taps), two words: kraut balls, there are options for vegetarians, very reasonably priced. Come check this place out. It’s one of the original breweries in Indy before the craft beer explosion. Rumor has it they will be bottling soon adding to their distribution portfolio.

Love the food and their own brews. But what happened to the Cerealine Cream Ale? It used to be so smooth, now it’s got some sort of acidic floral aftertaste :-(

Powerhouse Brewing is a place I had never heard of until their First Friday show. It’s a building set back from the road behind a construction business, but don’t be put off by the location. They had a couple beers on tap — the Love Nugget and the Pink Houses were the ones I tried. Love Nugget is a nice hoppy pale ale, and Pink Houses is a hibiscus wheat. The hibiscus flavor isn’t too sweet or overwhelming, which I like. Combining the two makes a very tasty summer beverage. The guys that work at the brewery are friendly and will takl to you about the brewing process and the hops they have growing outside. Pints are $ 5, and they had a flatbread pizza truck out for the First Friday show. There’s a small indoor tap room and a patio with limited seating, so bring a chair or something if you’re going for music.
