I’m not sure what it is, but there seem to be several gay colorguards in Columbus. Perhaps it’s the literal notion that you’re waving a banner for something you support. The Flaggots are my favorite gay colorguard group, but SPIN is decent too. The two groups aren’t rivals; they support each other. Like the Flaggots, SPIN members aren’t the savviest flag twirlers around, but they have spirit. I have a lot of appreciation for groups like SPIN because they provide a way for people involved with the GLBT community to connect and to express pride. Some SPIN members have experience; some have none. SPIN is more split than the Flaggots; I’d estimate half the members are male, half female. I don’t find SPIN’s performances to be as energetic as the Flaggot’s. But I would say that SPIN is probably more active, since I’ve seen them perform more. SPIN has a guerilla performance style. Sometimes, they will bring out a couple of barricades and perform in the middle of a side street on a busy night in the Short North. It’s totally illegal and a bit bothersome to the traffic flow, but that’s what makes it fun. Apparently the group spins rifles at some of their shows. I’d very much like to see that.
