I’m sometimes surprised that I would still want to go to video stores. After all, surely with Netflix and other services putting movies online, shouldn’t the brick-and-mortar video store be obsolete? No, actually. Video streaming services are cutting back on what they offer, and Redbox usually only holds the newest, most popular releases(no, I do not want to see Guardians of the Galaxy or Paul Blart). There’s a place for a well-curated video store experience, and Video Central is that store. Dollar a day deals, good balance of foreign films and arty stuff with mainstream releases… we need places like this.

I still go to video stores – rarely. Lucky for me, one of the last independent rental shops is nearby. They have documentaries, old flicks, and TV series seasons for rent which are often not found on Netflix streaming nor Redbox. Meanwhile torrents often come with more viruses than a Livingstone-Parsons streetwalker, and the library’s inventories are alway out. So Video Central is key when I want or need to see something outside of modern modes. I think but am not sure that this place is owned by the people who ran North Campus Video, that off-campus haunt once full of novelty and the weird, now gone to the graveyard of obsolence. It certainly reminds me of it, though it lacks the full collection of eccentricisms. It still good for first released blue rays of the latest Hollywood hack effort, having them before the dispensers and the streaming. I find the service here pretty good, FYI. The prices are great – some old releases are $ 1, and they have enough new releases in stock.
