After missing out on Gloria’s Soul Food, which I had heard good things about, I had to try out the new restaurant in its place. To be sure, Zion Cafeteria delivers on what it claims to be: a church cafeteria with daily specials. The baptist church of the same name down the street wanted to open a restaurant to make a difference on East Main Street, which is admirable. The food was just OK, aside from the meatloaf which was solid, but of a smallish portion(if it came with more slices rather than one I would’ve bumped it up a star). Greens didn’t have any zing and the corn bread was alright, while the pecan pie is unfortunately not made by someone’s grandma, but rather out of a box. Perhaps if they can get some of them in the kitchen it would make a visit more compelling. In the end it’s another much needed restaurant option on a street that needs some and you can feel warm and fuzzy for supporting a local business that is trying to improve the area.
