Looking for Authentic Barbacoa made with Lamb not Beef? This Magic Land is hidden in the industrial jungle of Commerce, CA. Totally worth the drive. I sampled all 3 types in tacos, the Pancita was too gamey for me, but OMG the small, the taste… Sorry just had a Foodgasm. Make sure to try or order a side of Consome. Which is the broth the barbacoa is made in.

Best Mexican Bbq Lamb I EVER had which is what they are famous for! They are the he only place in SiCal that serve Pulque made of the Magay(?) plant. They hey blend it in different natural fruit flavored. I loved the Tamarindo marguerita, yummy!

Man oh man! Where often can you find a delicious filling dish for $ 10. Here, on the massively busy street that we pass everyday without looking over at it. So glad it was dineLA Week so I could stop in and get acquainted. YUM! I walked in to folk who had already started happy hour. Karaōke was in full swing at 6PM. I was coming to meet friends for dinner. We ordered drinks(I had horchata). The horchata was just okay, but delicious. I looked over the menu and knew I came for barbacoa! For the unique palette however, there is chicken, rabbit, lamb and the brains and tongues of each. I just had the regular ol’ barbacoa. YUM! My experience was delicious! Sope. Check! Taco. Needed more flavor. So, enchilada? Check – and share the mole with the taco. YUM!

Food was good, we had the Huitlacoche quesataco, consome and a barbacoa Mixiote. The café de olla had a authentic flavor pueblo style. I would prefer more spicier salsa on the side, the green was fine. The reason im giving ir a 2 star, the mens RR was discusting(11:00am). My personal opinión is that the RR is a reflection of your cleaningless of the back of your house(meaning your kitchen). Manager: where is your supervision, your janitor, who cleaning your entire establishment ‚ In general the place needs a lot of attention, servers need help, our Server(Abigail) did a great job, but she was overloaded and stuggling . The tables are rocky, chrome napking holders dirty, just lot of items to mention. This is a money making business, get it together . Big Dissapointment Will not be back

Randomly came across this place and tried lamb for the first time! It was good!!! Service was good and food came quick! The place was clean with a bar! The only complaint I have(or maybe I am not use to it) is the music and the menu was mostly in Spanish. Other than that it was cool!

I walked it and it was fairly empty, other than me my client there was two other people. I was as to seat wherever I pleased. I ask the waiter for two waters. My glass of water had something floating around, I ask for a new glass and the same thing. I was ready to leave at that point. He finally brought me a clean glass. The food is ok, nothing what I expected. I should’ve listened to the rest of the Unilocalers. The lamb came out and it was cold, I wasn’t to fond of that. They brought me a michelada and the glass smelled like mildew I didn’t even request for a new one I just left it alone at that point. The food was really a let down, not sure what happen to this place. I don’t think I’ll be coming back.

So I’m always on the mission to find a good Sunday birra spot. I’m usually let down. Just from a visual, I assumed this place was going to let me down as well. So I was out in commerce working and asked a buddy of he had any birra spots close by, he replied that yep a new one just opened up. So we went. Walking up it looks like a run down restaurant, and walking in was kinda the same. But this place was crowded, and it’s pretty big inside. So I became pretty optimistic. We sat and I immediately ordered the Cuban style Michelada. It was so delicious! Next for an appetizer I got the cactus salad. It is pickled cactus, tomato, onion. I added a little salt. I’m kind of a salt whore. It was really good. Next on to the main course… We both ordered the lamb barbacoa. You get a side of lamb broth with crunchy garbanzo beans, fresh corn tortillas, and a plate with two different kinds of onions, and a bowl of limes. This isn’t traditionally the way I’ve had birria, and to be honest they don’t call it birra here. I guess different regions in Mexico call it different things. But this was birria, and it was good AF! I highly recommend this place. I’ll be back even though it’s 45 miles from my home. My only complaint was today was windy and the leave the patio door open. I could have said something I’m sure, but I was consumed by consumption! Until next time!

This place had pretty good reviews so we decided to take my grandma here for her birthday. It was was so crowded, we waited for 30 minutes to be seated. We got seated in an outdoor patio. It was hot and our table was dirty, ugh. They had ceiling fans above but they weren’t on… Our server came by to take our drink order and disappeared for 15 minutes. After flagging her down she brought out drinks and we ordered our food. I got the combination plate with chicken and tacos flautas and one of their famous lamb Barbacoa sopes. I’m not a huge fan of lamb but I wanted to give it a try. Our food took about 30 minutes to come and when it came it was lukewarm temperature. We had a group of 9 and the food all came at differing times. The flautas and taco were so good. Sadly, the lamb was too gamey for me. Overall, a really average dining experience with okay good. Slow service was a bummer. Oh and the bathrooms were atrocious. I think they maybe clean them once a day…

5 stars for the food, 4 stars for the service. 4.5 stars!!! One of the best Mexican restaurants in Southern California. On my list for a while now, I finally made the effort to visit when invited by a friend who also had this on her list. I tried to make it on several trips to Mexico and also while in San Diego, but never had enough belly space to fit it in my agenda. We ordered to share: Lamb Barbecue(barbacoa) plate with lamb broth Chicharron de queso Huitlacoche quesataco Zucchini Quesadilla Grilled Quail Pineapple pulque Coconut pulque Cerveceria Mexicana(Penjamo, Guanajuato, Mexico) — Immortal Beloved Hefeweizen Cerveceria Agua(Ensenada, Baja Mexico) — Mala Astillero IPA The highlight of our early dinner was the barbacoa(of course). This is what they’re known for. They replicated this particular lamb barbecue style that can be found just outside of Mexico City. We both loved how it was not your typical lamb that can be described as «gamey» in taste. It was moist, tender, and absolutely delightful. LA Times food critic has said that he has driven to San Diego to eat this dish. The lamb broth was really tasty as well. I didn’t want to leave our leftover soup to waste and took it home. My second favorite was the chicharron de queso, which reminded me of dosa in shape. It was crisp, chewy and addicting for cheese lovers. I also loved the huitlacoche quesataco. I can’t really pinpoint what I love about huitlacoche(aka corn smut, corn truffle) yet, but I love ordering it whenever I see it on a menu. I loved the different choices of pulque. Our server was kind to give us samples of each before we ordered. We ordered the coconut and pineapple pulques. My friend made a pina-colada out of both. I have had a pulque tasting before at Kokopelli in Tijuana and it had more of a cloudy, milky look to it than here. Here’s some info on pulque from Wikipedia: «Pulque is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented sap of the maguey(agave) plant. It is traditional to central Mexico, where it has been produced for millennia. It has the color of milk, somewhat viscous consistency and a sour yeast-like taste. The drink’s history extends far back into the Mesoamerican period, when it was considered sacred, and its use was limited to certain classes of people. After the Spanish Conquest of Mexico, the drink became secular and its consumption rose. The consumption of pulque reached its peak in the late 19th century. In the 20th century, the drink fell into decline, mostly because of competition from beer, which became more prevalent with the arrival of European immigrants. There are some efforts to revive the drink’s popularity through tourism.» For craft beer, we ordered the Dia de los Muertos Hef and IPA — both were good, but not stand outs for craft beer. I should have ordered the Insurgente Porter, which is from a more reputable craft brewery in Mexico. They were voted«best brewery» in Mexico last year. After dropping off the food, we weren’t checked up on during our meal. It looked like he was the only server tending to two other tables. I would have loved it if the service level was more attentive during our meal to make it a five-star experience. I can look past it because I enjoyed what we ordered. Everything was consistent and full of flavor — not a bland dish. I drove almost 1.5 hours to eat here and after dinner, I didn’t regret the drive through the worst traffic day of the week. Highly recommended! Go for the food, not the service.

Pound for pound, dollar for dollar this restaurant had some of the best Mexican food north of the border. This was a serious take on some of Latin cooking’s best dishes. The star of this show is the Lamb Barbacoa. It was drop dead good. The taste, texture, aroma, sides and the way it’s served is Perfect. Five star perfection. The grilled quail was also in the same category as the lamb. Just great. The corn tortillas were excellent and the salsas where there on the table like an ideally paired wine breathing and ready for use for this meal. The ice cold Modelo beers also helped kick this meal to the next level in eating. I’ve kept it no secret how much I really liked this place. So why four stars and not five? I’ll go one step further; if I could, I would have given it 3 ½ stars — Bummer. The restrooms were filthy. Not dirty or untidy. Filthy. I’ve seen Arco Station restrooms outside of Lone Pine on Highway 395 cleaner than this one. How could such a popular and well respected establishment like Aqui Es Texcoco not take the time to send an attendant in every 60 — 90 minutes and clean up? This made absolutely no sense to me. Zero! This was a complete turn-off! The service was cordial but slightly inattentive. We had to ask for too many things, too many times. Tableware and plates came to us after our food was sitting on the table for several minutes. Our two desserts for the four of us came with two spoons. The other two spoons took 5 minutes to arrive. The water we asked for from the get go came at the tail end of our meal. Will I go back — For Sure. The food was just too damn good. Will I avoid the restrooms and pray for better service — Yes, I will.

Ok so after everything I’ve read about this place it’s fair to say my expectations were set pretty high my friends. Now once you walk in this place you just know your in for a truly unique dining experience! I mean I don’t walk into many restaurants and see people eating grasshopper tacos or any restaurants for that matter. Thought that was very cool. Ok so when you look thru they’re menu you will notice they’re obviously known for they’re Barbacoa so I think I’ll skip the grasshoppers on this visit and go with the Barbacoa! So I gotta point out if I came here for the Barbacoa alone I might not be coming back to this place but they got some really unique dishes the queso taco I had was a taco made out of cheese I mean the taco shell was all cheese! Do you understand how happy that makes me? Anyway I would comeback just for that taco alone the chiccharron de queso was«aaaiiigghhhhht» service was good but not great I don’t know why they are so tight with the Ice here, but our weightier did give us free pulque and flan very nice! So overall I’m leaving happy and anticipating another visit where I can explore the menu more in depth!

Came here again to celebrate birthdays. Enclosed patio with picnic benches was a nice area to sit for large groups. Again, we got to try various foods by sharing everything. Highlights: 1. Quail– Kinda of like chicken. Seasoned nicely 2. Lamb rib– very tender 3. Lamb meat– very tender as well though this had more of a gamey taste than the ribs 4. Zucchini Flower Quesadilla– one of my favorites here. 5. Chicaron de Queso– fried cheese with plenty of guacamole. I wish they gave us chips so we can eat the rest of the guacamole with it. Yum. 6. Flan– We got this as a complimentary gift for our bdays. They serve one of the best flans, but other people didn’t think so. I don’t mind the moderate spongy texture. You def can taste the caramel, but it is moderately sweet. Everyone agreed that they liked the uniqueness of this Mexican restaurant.

Aquí Es Texcoco. Aquí estoy! DineLA week 2015 stop #4 It’s the end of an era; DineLA week 2015 is over. I was able to hit up 4 restaurants: Fleming’s, Gordon Ramsay at the London West Hollywood, K-ZO, and Aquí Es Texcoco. Overall it was a great experience. Without Unilocal and DineLA, I would never have had the opportunity to eat at these places. My buddy Steve S found this place for DineLA. His review looked great, so aquí estoy(here I am). I was torn between trying something new(rabbit) and going with something I’ve had before at other places and liked(lamb). I asked to do a little of both — but because the dishes are proportioned with the sides — they said I couldn’t do that. I chickened out and took the safe route; I got the lamb. For the $ 15 DineLA I got: –Crunchy grilled cheese with guacamole –Lamb barbecue plate(meat and rib) –Lamb broth –Agua Fresca, Tamarind flavor –Limes, onions, pico de gallo, and tortillas. Adriana was helpful throughout, even when I bugged her about trying to get lamb and rabbit. The grilled cheese crisp arrived. This thing was huge! It reminded me of a small football stadium, so I filled it with thousands of adoring fans(the guacamole). This was a refreshing take on an appetizer. The combination of crisp cheese and soft, fresh guacamole created a nice textural contrast. I liked that it was something different. It was salty, crispy, tasty, and unique. It was my favorite item of the meal. The lamb came wrapped in a silver, tin foil vessel. Upon opening, my senses were treated to soft, tender, juicy, succulent lamb. It was only the slightest hint of gamy. Like Steve S, I too was not sure whether the lamb broth was meant as a dipping sauce(like au jus), or to be drunken like a soup — so I did both. When drinking the broth, I discovered it was strong and powerful — too much for me to drink as a soup. So maybe it was meant to be just a dipping broth. The agua fresca was very good(they make it fresh). It was sour, tart, almost like a lemonade. Bits of tamarind sunk to the bottom and enhanced its natural flavor. My only prior experience with tamarind is the Jarritos brand bottled drink. This was like the homemade version with real tamarind added. For $ 15 this was a good DineLA meal. I was pleased to have tried a few unfamiliar items and experience something out of the ordinary. Different aromas, visuals, and flavors provided a delightful end to a wonderful DineLA 2015. Until next year!

The lamb barbacoa is pit roasted with agave leaves and named one of the top ten restaurant dishes of 2014 by LA times restaurant critic Jonathan Gold. The lamb is moist and tender, and only mildly gamey. The lamb is also delicious in quesadilla form, filled with gooey, melty, Monterey Jack cheese. The quesadilla was a bit smaller than expected(taco sized) and the wrapper is a corn tortilla vs the more familiar flour tortilla, but the simplicity of the 3 ingredients, makes for excellent comfort food. The lamb consumme/soup features rice, garbanzo beans, and a plump dried chili in a lamb broth. I garnished my soup with epazote, cilantro and a squeeze of lime. The lime brings out the bright flavors of the epazote which nicely compliments the lamb. When you sit down the waitress sets the table with a condiment cart that features: key lime, chopped cilantro/onions, and pickled onions. She also brings you two squeeze bottles filled with sauces/salsas: 1. Sweet brown sauce– made with beer, black chili, pulque 2. Green sauce– watery, spicy, with tomatillos Pulque is a pre-Hispanic drink made from the fermented pulp of the maguey plant. The pulque served here hails from the traditions of the Hidalgo region of Mexico. It has an AbV of 6%. The taste is sour, creamy and there is an alcoholic burn felt after a few chugs. An article from, Los Angeles magazine, is posted on the wall, and it proclaims that, Aqui es Texcoco, is the only place to get authentic pulque in the United States. Pulque and Lamb Barbacoa are the must try items when visiting Aqui es Texcoco. For even more adventurous eating there are also fried crickets on the menu.

Oh, that sweet, sweetest spot on the Venn diagram; the intersection of «Jonathan Gold-reviewed-and-approved» and«dineLA» and«freaking delicious.» Long a fan of Mexican food, I drove down after a Saturday slaving away catching up on paperwork hoping for something good. I was starving. A bit off the freeway, you will know at once that you are in a restaurant serving truly authentic Mexican food the minute you enter the door. All the staff speak English but my Spanish sure came in handy. Families have obviously made this a Saturday destination; the place was packed with tons of people having some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had north of the border. The dineLA lunch deal I selected was as follows: $ 15(saving $ 6 off menu prices): Appetizer: Chicharrón de queso: A roll of delightfully grilled cheese, reminiscent in shape of the Indian dhosa but pure cheese. Not too long ago, I had fettuccine on a Princess cruise that arrived with a layer of cheese that tastes exactly like this: amazing. Served with a generous portion of fresh, perfectly seasoned guacamole. Main plate: Consome de borrego: a small bowl of lamb broth arrives first. This just might be the tastiest, most flavorful broth I’ve ever had in my life. The broth includes small grains of rice and the tiniest garbanzo beans ever. This broth is intense, rich, and might cure whatever ails you. I would have paid the whole price just for this! No joke. Plato de barbacoa(lamb barbecue): this might be the tenderest and most flavorful BBQ dish I’ve ever, ever had. Different cuts of meat are available; I chose the«lean» cut which, thank God, would most definitely NOT pass muster as «lean» at Whole Foods. Served with tortillas, onions, salsa and lime slices. Divine. Drink: I selected Horchata, which was perfect. But there’s more! A very kind couple sitting at the table next to me patiently answered my questions in Spanish(naturalmente…) and then let it slip that pulque is served here. Pulque! You know what it is? Before there was tequila, there was pulque. I remember living in Mexico as a child and asking my parents what a pulquería is. It’s a bar that serves only pulque, a fermented drink made from the sap of the maguey. Long predating the conquistadores, it has been modernized here: they serve not only the slightly astringent, citrusy original; they also have strawberry, mango, oatmeal and walnut. My absolutely wonderful server Adriana(so patient!) provided me with TWO free samples of the natural and the walnut. If you like tartness, you might enjoy the natural. I adored the walnut; it’s sweeter and, of course, nuttier. Then? Flan, of course. Awesome, perfectly creamy but not soggy, with perfectly carmelized sauce. Apparently, there is a ROCKING happy hour here M-F 4 – 8. Can you say Mexican craft beers for $ 4.25? Domestic beers as low as $ 2.25? $ 4 well drinks? Apps for $ 4 including quesadillas, the above-mentioned chicharrón de queso, chalupas and flautas. Muchisimas gracias para todo. Buen provecho, todos. Enjoy.

The Barbacoa(Barbecue Lamb) is DELICIOUS! DineLA Restaurant Week.(Winter 2015) First stop Aqui es Texcoco Props to DineLA — I get to try out a restaurant at a reduced price and taste the food of some of the better restaurants in the Los Angeles area. That’s how I found Texcoco. The DineLA menu they had intrigued me. Lamb, Quail, Rabbit and Lamb Brain Tacos were the main entreè choices. Wow, that’s probably the most unique entreès I saw looking at the menus from the participating restaurants. I booked a reservation, but I didn’t need it. I got a seat pronto and ordered my meal from the DineLA menu(Lunch for $ 15 — Appetizer, Main Entrée & a drink.) I got started with the Chicharron de Queso(Crunchy Grilled Cheese) with Guacamole — Great start. It’s what the description says it is. Melted cheese almost in the shape of a taco and it’s long(a foot long). It was crunchy. Just break a piece and dip it in the guacamole. Delicious! Better than any chips and salsa you’ll have. lol. For my main entrée, I chose the Plato de Barbacoa(Lamb Barbecue Plate ½ lb). It came with a small lamb broth(OMG, the best lamb broth I’ve had), corn tortillas, some fixins(lime, cilantro & onions and pickled onions) and a couple of hot sauces(a red one and a green one, I preferred the green one) The lamb was so tender. No gaminess at all. It was DELICIOUS! The lamb broth was so good as well. I wasn’t sure if the lamb broth was for dipping the meat or just as a soup. So I did both. I dipped the meat in the broth before making my tacos and had the leftover broth as soup. I want a big bowl of that broth next time. Yum! As a whole, this is one of the best lamb dish I’ve ever had. The meal included a drink. I got a horchata which was good(not great) The place is pretty big. They have a covered patio for semi outdoor seating which makes them bigger. Lol. They had some flat screen TV’s, they had a soccer game showing when I was there. Parking was a breeze. Service was good. I got a discount for using the DineLA menu and I got to try one of the best lamb dish I’ve ever had. Win Win! I will be more adventurous next time and try their quail and rabbit dishes. If it’s anything close to the lamb. It has to be good =) Rating: 4 ½ stars. Try them out for yourself and decide. 2015 Review #3
