Sensei Derek is a truly talented instructor. His credentials are outstanding for a man of his age and his knowledge is evident in the manner in which he instructs. He’s great with both beginners and those who are already versed in jiu jitsu. The reason I recommend Touyou No Chie is the way Sensei Derek teaches his techniques: He’ll show you how the move is done in traditional Japanese jiu jitsu, then he’ll show you how the move is done in Brazilian jiu jitsu, finally he’ll show you the way he does that same moved but based on his experience in wrestling and his expertise in jiu jitsu and kinesiology. And trust me, his techniques, man, his method hurts the most and is usually easier set. After taking a few classes at Touyou No Chie, it’s easy to see why Jiu Jitsu America view Sensei Derek as a rising star instructor in the greater jiu jitsu world.

The instructors are very good. I’ve trained with them long before they were black belts and they definitely know what they’re doing. Training is intense but supportive for you to grow your skills and it’s a good community of fellow martial artists. Take a class, see for yourself, and decide for yourself.
