What a disappointment. We spotted the place on our way up to Canada, and since it was closed, decided to stop by on our way back. When we arrived, the place was empty. We got seated quickly in a guest room that has clearly seen better times. The waitress was unfamiliar with the German names on the menu(I grew up in Germany — Berlin area in fact) and wanted every item of the order pointed out or ordered by number(«That’s how we do it here.») The pea soup was not half-bad, but the«bread basket» was a sliced-up supermarket dinner roll. You expect a lot more from an «authentic» German restaurant — breads are a big deal and rather delicious in Germany. We ordered the Königsberger Klopse(«white meatballs»). While the presentation was nice, the food quality was less so. The Klopse and the mashed potatoes were almost cold, clearly frozen and quickly warmed up. The Klopse tasted basically just salty, not much other flavor. The sauce was of a dubious consistency. The best was still the Sauerkraut and the red cabbage — from a jar and easily heated up. Neither one of us finished up this dish. Absolutely not worth $ 20 a plate! As we were leaving, one other couple had stumbled in, clearly on an adventure and trying to figure out the boots. For somebody looking for decent German food this place is not. We came with big hopes but left hungry and disappointed. We will not be back.

Stopped here on a whim, on my way through the state, was not disappointed. The food was great, the workers were even better. Very friendly, even the owner was extremely likable. If I am ever traveling through the area again, I will be sure to stop and have myself some delicious authentic German cuisine.

Bad service. Waited 10 min for a beer and we were 2 of 4 ppl in the place. Lifetime channel on at bar on a Sunday afternoon. Scary old and dirty.

Based in New York City, this is the charming proprietor family’s Upstate home. We are veg, so the options are naturally limited for us, but the rare German beers we love are all stocked in the bar. Always a good time. Lovely beer garden.

Tried to eat here as I’ve been craving German food for a long time and we don’t have any where we live. We were driving by on 81 and I saw this restaurant here on Unilocal. We drove up and parked and got out to some delicious smells and my mouth was watering. Just then a woman came out and said we’re closed. It was 7:45! I guess I’m just not meant to ever have German food. Obviously they had just closed as like I said I could smell some good cooking, or maybe they just didn’t want to serve us for some reason.

So as my vacation is winding down to a close I had to make one more stop at Hallo Berlin in Conklin with my husband. We had a ball! They now have a new waitress, Rebecca whose smile lights up the whole room. Bernie came out to greet us and as usual went out of her way to serve us the most scrumptious cuisine ever! Wasn’t going to have soup, but Bernie suggested we try her Chicken vegetable soup and oh my! It was the best I’d ever had. Sorry that we missed Thomas, but we’ll be back to see him too! Very soon! Love you guys!

On two visits, the food at Hallo Berlin is consistently delicious. I don’t know if one of the founders is running the kitchen, but whoever it is has got a real flair for cooking authentic German food. The focus is definitely on various kinds of wurst, but they also have a lot of delicious sides and other things on offer. The curry wurst is probably my favorite along with the sauerkraut, but I’d encourage any new customers to try a variety platter. The first time I visited, I sat at the bar and the woman working was very on-point. I would call the service excellent. The second time, not as good. We sat in the dining room, and the entire place was quite muggy. It was hot and humid outside and they had all the windows open rather than A/C. They were also pumping an obnoxious pop music radio station over the speakers, which clashed rather sharply with the authentic atmosphere as we had to listen commercials, DJs yammering, etc. If you’re going to have music, at least play German music and don’t make customers listen to radio commercials. The server also got my beer order wrong, and I got the impression she was not familiar with the beer offerings. Despite the lower-quality experience on the second visit, I would return, and I would recommend anyone try it out.

One of the«wurst» dining experiences I have had in a long time. Waitress was clueless. Soup of the day was listed as white bean. Received lentil soup instead. Three out of four ordered sauerbraten. I ordered 2 wursts. Sauerbraten was not good. Wursts were good. Beer was great but server never asked if we’d care for another. I ordered pretzel with mustard as an appetizer. It came out when I was about finished with main course. Server never asked if we wanted desert or coffee. Just put the check down. Credit card machine was broken had to write check. I would never go back. The music was horrendous, not even slightly German. Disappointed to say the least.

The food was decent(especially the Apfelstrudel and the sausages), but the service was so slow it was painful. Our service took three hours when it should have been no more than about two. Our waitress was just generally bad at her job(many trips with empty hands, not putting the ticket in quickly, messing up the itemization and math on our receipt because they weren’t accepting credit cards that night). The Jagerschnitzel, though decent, wasn’t worth $ 22. I’d return, but only to sample the excellent German beers and have a sausage sandwich at the bar. Don’t bring family here unless they’re dying to try it. From talking to my friends that have dined here, it’s very hit or miss.

I wish this review is about the food. However, we didn’t get a chance to eat. When we got there it was about an hour before closing. The hostess mumbled something about a half hour wait and that everyone came in all at once. I looked around and saw two tables full of people and the rest of the restaurant empty. In other words, I’m not sure why there is a ½ hour wait. I’ll give the hostess credit for warning us and seating us relatively quickly but afterwards there wasn’t so much as a look in our direction. I was looking forward to the German food and beers. Unfortunately, bad service didn’t allow us the chance. I’m hoping for the restaurant’s sake that this is just bad timing on our part rather than the norm. I would give it zero stars if I can, but Unilocal sees it as me not giving it a rating.

Nice, genuine German food and beer(and cordials) in an out of the way location. Old rambling restaurant and bar with an old world feel. If it wasn’t in the middle of nowhere, would go there more often.

We were driving from PA to NY and looking for somewhere to stop for lunch near Binghamton. After reading the Unilocal reviews we very easily decided to stop at here. The food was amazing! I only give it 4 stars instead of 5 because I wish that the restaurant itself was a bit cleaner. I almost was ready to walk out without ordering any food! The bread with our food was hot and possibly the best I’ve ever had. The white bean soup of the day was amazing– although I happen to like the heavy handed dill flavor. Beer was good too! Definitely will be stopping there again in the future. We were the only ones there and the service was good.

Wow! This may well be my new favorite place in all of New York! Hallo Berlin is a great little restaurant. Situated in a sleepy little village and surrounded by the beautiful New York country side, this restaurant is ideal for all occasions. The food is authentically German and as someone who has spent several years living in Germany, I feel qualified to make that call. I had the Wiener Schnitzel, which they happily added Jagar sauce at my request. It was superb! It made me miss my days in Heidelberg. For starters we ordered a sampling platter of sides, all of which were incredible. This included what may have been the best sauerkraut I’ve had in America. Boasting a fantastic selection of German beers, there was no end to the tasting and sharing. We order several from bottles and draft, creating our own little beer flight. Of note the rauchbier is fantastic. Further, I tend to appreciate any place that serves Franziskaner. The staff are friendly and knowledgable. We sat outside on the patio, which is sometimes an obstacle for good service. However, our waitress regularly checked that we were satisfied, having to make the trip outside each time. Overall, great experience. If ever you find yourself in western New York, make the trip to Hallo Berlin! You will not be disappointed.

Stopped in after seeing a tiny sign on the Interstate, and wanted something other than the usual rest-stop fare for lunch. Very impressed! I’m not entirely sure how they stay in business, but I’m just happy they were there. The wursts are particularly good, but we also tried the curry-style beef stew, which would be worth repeating.(It comes by default with mashed potatoes, however I ordered it with spätzle; they had no issues substituting). The favorite side by far were the ‘german fries’, which are sauteed, not deep-fried. The complimentary bread rolls were amazing, warm and crusty, and went perfectly with the soup. And, of course, beer: although the menu had a draft list of perhaps 7 or 8 choices, they only seemed to have 3 or 4 available. This seems in keeping with how busy the place is, and is probably good in terms of freshness. There seemed to be two lagers, a marzen, and a weissebier available; my dining companion and I each had one of the two lagers. If we hadn’t needed to get back on the Interstate for a few more hours, we easily could have stayed and investigated the entire list, in volume. Beer is sold in standard European quantities: 0.3L, 0.5L, 1L, etc. And the bar in front of the dining room looks ancient; just the sort of place to have a few. The same owners have another location in NYC, which is probably more accessible than the location in Conklin, but I’ll definitely be stopping back in the next time I find myself driving down I-81.

Had a great dinner just sitting at the bar shooting the breeze with some people I met there along with the owner. A bit out of the way but totally worth it. Great beer, great service, interesting atmosphere.

Update! Now with any dinner you get a bowl of lentil soup, any night of the week. Also, as always, free refills on sodas, great food recommendations for my newly brought in friends. They loved the place as much as we do — my one friend ordered the pork chops and was very impressed, one dish on the menu I have yet to try! No german chocolate cake this time, sadly, but the other desserts we tried were all just as great! My friends split the coconut cake, while I had black forest and my fiancée’ had strudel. The menus were just re-done, but other than the soup being included with dinner I didn’t notice any new menu items. Same old good stuff.

LOVEDIT! The bockwurst, the bratwurst, the German pork chops and potato salad all rocked! I am one of those hard core foodies that will drive 3 ½ hours to see if a restaurant is worth its weight in gold and this place truly is a hidden gem. Above everything else… I’ve never been treated with such great hospitality as I was at Hallo Berlin. Never. I was not only astonished but overwhelmed by the warmth and welcoming spirit the owner, Thomas, and his patron at the bar gave us. Truly folks… this restaurant is in a class within itself and deserves higher than 5 stars. The service outshines the food, and the food is pretty kick a$$ in its own right.
