This Super Stop and Shop is huge! Whenever I visit my Mom, I drop by here on the way home. I like that it’s brightly lit with wide aisles and is well stocked. They usually have some pretty good sales, so we’ll buy the unperishables for home. Since it’s a drive home, I’ve never really dawdled in the meat or deli department. But, i do remember looking for something in their seafood department once — which should really not even be called a department. It’s like a tiny little corner that was kind of stinky and gross. Anyhoo, if this is your hood or if you’re near this hood and need groceries, come to the Stop and Shop! P.S. Try the Miami Onion Roll in the bakery department — they’re yummy!

My local Stop and Shop is a hop, skip, and a jump from my apartment… supposing, of course that I WAS a hopper, skipper, or jumper. My philosophy is simple” don’t run when you can walk, and don’t’ walk when you can drive.” The ancillary axiom, obviously, is «never, under any circumstances, hop, skip, or jump anywhere»(All right, I admit that there are exceptions to the ancillary axiom; however, they happen to be of a sexual nature and involve a really hot young guy!) That being said, Stop and Shop in Coram is big, bright, and well stocked at all times. The staff is unfailingly friendly and helpful. The Bakery Department is adequate enough(for a supermarket bakery) and the deli department, tho a bit pricey, boasts the most skilled slicers I have encountered in all my years of food shopping. The number of those years, frankly, is a terrifying number with which i won’t scare you. The meat department is clean, the meat fresh and of good quality, although I am perplexed as to why I can’t find a pre-packaged selection with which to make Italian sauce. You know, a bracciole, some pork, a nice sausage or two… not to be found here. Sigh. It’s a hardship. They have a lovely selection of Angus meat and some specialty items(buffalo – EW!) The grocery department itself is remarkable in the wide array of ethnic foods available. Not relying on the standard Kosher and Chinese, there is a large selection of Latin food(not just Mexican Nacho mix) as well as an admirable section of Polish food. And, bless their corporate souls, there is even a small selection of Irish food! This includes the inimitable McCain’s oatmeal and Barry’s Irish Tea. Tetley drinkers, give it up! Irish tea is the way to go – like my sweetie, it’s strong and dark. Organic food is well-represented, as well. If you insist, you can eat healthy food. The Produce department has a large selection of organic fruits and veggies, and other items turn up throughout the store aisles. There is also a large refrigerator and freezer section with organic food, and an entire aisle dedicated solely to healthy eating. As long as they still stock Twinkies, I’m good with it. A final positive note: the Pharmacy here ROCKS! Mike the Pharmacist is a doll, who takes the time to know all the customers by name and is both knowledgeable and efficient. OK, here’s the part that brings this supermarket down from a solid four stars to a wimpy 3 stars. The Fish Department. Yuck. Truly, honest-to-God stinky. P U. Now i freely admit that I eat nothing that has gills, is a bivalve, looks like an alien creature, possesses an exoskeleton, or is cold-blooded. That being said, I am a true island girl who grew up on the waters here, clamming, fishing, crabbing – the whole nine. I like doing that stuff, I just ain’t eating it anytime soon. Point is, fresh fish doesn’t smell. Ever. That offensive odor only comes from fish that is NOT fresh and a fish department that is not cleaned or maintained properly.(and in some cases, very poor hygiene) I hate walking by it as I pass from Produce to Meat. Bleah. So there you have it, my opinion, for what it’s worth.
