I absolutely love this place! My family and i eat here at least once a month for our seafood fix, the scallops are to die for! I’m outraged on some of these reviews that don’t give them enough credit! We been coming for for a year now and I must say they do get busy on the weekends compared to the week days. But doesn’t change the fact that the prices are great and the food and sauces are SO good! The servers look a bit exhausted on a busy night, but for the most part get the job done. BTW the servers and chefs split their tips 50⁄50 which is great because we don’t have to worry about getting cash to tip the chef. Anyways if u want to have a good experience and faster service for those who are impatient my advice would be to go on a week day after their early bird special which ends at 6:30 which we try to do and we’ve had 5 star service. It’s a great place to have big family dinners.

I’ve had horrible service here before(ants inside a shot of sake, bad and they wouldn’t even comp the sake…) that being said, we returned one night on a whim after a couple of years. The service was fantastic, we had a table that was literally just us and our 2 year old and the chef catered to her. She had an absolutel blast so we were all thrilled. The food was plentiful and delicious and the drinks stayed full. We’ll definitely put them back on rotation. Side note… as we were leaving, they were struggling with the sake down on the floor out in the hall, away from the bar… I think I know where the ants came from. ;)

Awesome Hibachi Grill. Ordered the chicken & salmon and found the food flavorful and delectable. I love seeing the food cooked in front of me. Theatrics include the ‘almost eyebrow singeing’ lighting of the grill and the onion volcano. Pretty cool! Kinda took a while for the cooking of the food to get started, especially on a super slow night, but I’m hoping this was an anomaly and not the norm.

I took my 2 children to Shogun last night and it was a major disappointment. I usually don’t mind paying the super inflated prices because at a place like this the chef puts on an entertaining show while you eat. That used to be the case with Shogun, now it is as bland as the food. After the initial m «ooh & aah» of the big flame and a little bit of salt-and-pepper shaking and rattling, that’s it. There’s no more show. No witty banter, no tossing the egg, no corny jokes — nothing. and apparently they’ve changed their policy so that you now have to request Yum Yum sauce, and it’s $.50 extra. I just paid $ 78 for three people to eat dinner. You’d think 2 tablespoons worth of mayonnaise would come with that. I obviously don’t care about the $.50, I just think that this is indicative of the overall problem at this restaurant. Don’t waste your money or your Friday night.

Really good food! So here’s the deal. I’ll try and make it a compliment sandwich. The positive: Food is really good and not overpriced for what it is. Had steak and chicken and it was tasty. The negative: We went to lunch and were the first 3 to get seat at a new station, so it took a bit before the station filled up with people. Then we had to wait for them to order. The positive: Food was really tasty and overall the experience is better than the current 2 ½ star rating this place has now. It’s like watching a movie. It takes awhile for the movie/food to build up, but once the action scene/cooking takes place, it’s all good. Would eat here again.

So, I can definitely understand why the parking lot was light. The food was bland, the vibe was blah the service was slow and the birthday dessert was a joke. The waitress was a spoon in a knife drawer to put it nicely.

Have always loved this place and think it has some of the best sushi around. Unfortunately the last time I went I was disappointed. I normally order the Under the sea sushi plate. Normally it is even to much for me to eat and I don’t mind paying the $ 15.95. This time I received a small plate with around 6 pieces of sushi. As I said I have got this plate many times therefore know how it is supposed to be. I alerted to waitress and pointed out the difference. She then contacted the sushi chef and he said he just put everything together and made a roll. I pointed out the picture of what is supposed to be in the meal and he just walked away. I was still charged full price. I’m not going to say I won’t go back, but I am disappointed to say the least.

I want to like this place. I love Japanese food, particularly sushi, but I just couldn’t get into this place. The last time we were there, the place was fairly busy, but there wasn’t a wait time. The harried-looking waitress seated us at the empty bar, where we proceeded to sit for 30 minutes. No one came to take our order; no one asked what drinks we wanted. Even the sushi chef pretended we weren’t there. Eventually we stood up and left, and not even the hostess said anything to us. Very poor service. The first time I went, we ordered sushi which was passable but not all that grand. Most of their sushi rolls have mango sauce on them, and they put way too much of it on there. I doubt I’ll return.

We were not impressed at ALL! Our food wasn’t very good… all 4 of us ordered sweet tea & it came out soured. When we told the waitress she took it to her manager & they replied that we were wrong because it was just made & gave us attitude about it! We expected an awesome show & to have a really great time(like we have had at other hibachi restaurants) NOPE, it barely lasted 10 minutes! Our chef acted like he had other things he would rather be doing… just wanted to get on it over with & be done with us! We will not be going back!

Food was good but nothing different from any other Japanese steakhouse. The facility itself is average to slightly below average in its upkeep.

This is a great family restaurant! They treat you warmly the minute you walk in. It was pretty packed when we came in, but we were seated immediately and the server whose father owns the place was very friendly! The chef was very funny and our children loved him! Definitely coming back.

Shogun in Memphis is a grim and depressing place, folks. It makes a trip to Somalia sound appealing. I say avoid it at all costs. The inside of the building is in dirty shape, looks fugly, not kind of place where your tastebuds are enticed. Service was terrible, almost non-existent. Food was ok to average. I found a metal shaving from cooktop scraper in my steak — if I ate it, may have killed me or sent me to hospital! They then over charged our check for food we didn’t order and then couldn’t figure out how to fix the bill after we complained! Terrible, sad, just depressing experience in every regard. Awful stuff, folks. These kinds of declining places deserve to go under so better operators can take over and deliver better food and service to the community.

NOTGOOD. I was debating whether I should eat here or at a competing restaurant. Decided on this place. NOTGOOD… NOTGOOD… It took a long time for the waitress to acknowledge my presence.(NOTGOOD) We placed our order. We ordered hibachi entrees, sushi, and water to drink. The hibachi was okay. The service was poor, had to fill up my own water. Never got the sushi until we finished the meal. We were given a sad face that we did not any longer want this sushi.(NOTGOOD) I would have told the waitress to cancel the order due to a long wait but she never came by to see us.(NOTGOOD) The bill came and I presented my coupon. The waitress did not want to accept my coupon.(NOTGOOD) She sent the«manager» and he read me the riot act about how he loses money with the coupon, citing several emotional reasons as to why he wont accept the coupon.(NOTGOOD) They left and ran my card. The waitress came back and tried to tell me that I was mean to her dad(who was the manager she sent to me). I was not mean to her dad. This business does not understand real world business and customer service. They are very self-centered and selfish. They argued for a long time about this coupon with me. I was really scared I didnt know what they were going to do. I cannot believe this happened. It was truly shocking. After all this, the owner suggested that I come back at a later date to redeem my coupon(as if they will accept it then??) On the way out they were all staring at me very hard, made me feel like a celebrity. Do yourself a favor and try this out for yourself. You may luck out. There are certainly better japanese/sushi/hibachi restaurants in the area that will do a better job. They might not stare at you like a celebrity because you probably wont have to get in a big argument over a coupon that they issued.

I was really hoping to find a good hibachi restaurant in my new town and was underwhelmed. The portions were smaller than I’ve had before, and I’d skip the darker sauce. The chef was average and taste was about average as hibachi can go. The inside of the building was in disrepair and not hid well by the lack of lighting. I’m always more willing to let this go if the food is fantastic. It wasn’t.

I’m actually quite saddened and appalled at the bad reviews. We go here as much as possible and we have never had a bad experience. The sushi is delicious. The salad dressing is the best I have ever had. Everything is cooked to perfection there. Not only that, but the staff is always more than friendly to us. We love this place and encourage people to go. It’s a little pricy, but well worth the money.

Meh. That’s pretty much my whole opinion about this place. If you’ve been to Nagasaki Inn, stick with them. Our hibachi chef, Alex, barely said two words the whole time he was cooking our meal. The steak and shrimp were overly salty and the fried rice and vegetables were bland. The restaurant gets two stars for being clean and having friendly waitstaff.

Don’t recommend this place. My wife and I went to get sushi with my daughter. We were sat in the sushi room by the MANAGER. Our waiter came and took our drink order and we had to ask for a pen to fill out the SUSHI menu. We had been craving sushi, and they had a huge new sign out front touting their new SUSHICHEF! So after 10 minutes of looking at the menu and ordering some edamame and fried rice to keep my toddler happy we also gave the waiter our sushi order while sitting in the sushi room, sat by the manager. The waiter takes our order, returns 5 min later to inform us the sushi chef had a family emergency and he had to leave. He is the only person capable of making sushi in the entire restaurant. We tell him we are going to need a minute as we aren’t sure we really want hibachi. By the time the manager makes it over we decide that’s fine we can deal with hibachi. She comes over and immediately proceeds to tell us how she and the sushi chef had a «falling out» and he stormed out and left them. Keep in mind this is the lady who runs the place and sat us in the sushi room. She then does nothing to offer to offset our meal for now waiting 20 minutes and apparently being lied too. Now the owner shows up, she pleads her case about why she acted the way she did. He listens and leaves. She then starts telling her story to other employees in the sushi room who will listen. All why we are still waiting on our damn hibachi that we didn’t really want it was just too late to take a toddler elsewhere. After waiting over an hour for our food to arrive, at minute 40 the waiter tries to make it better and tells us he is going to take off one of the dinners. The food eventually arrives, it was mediocre at best. We had to run to Walmart for some errands and now a short 2 hours later, I sit here typing you this review angry because I am sitting on my throne at home again because of a restaurant I will forever boycott and I advise you to boycott as well, trust me on this one.

I took my family to the restaurant, we really enjoyed the experience, but the food was not very exciting. The chief cooks the food right in front of you, which is interesting and they put on a show. The timing of plating was way off, started with the rice, 5min later the steak, another 5 min for the shrimp the lastly the veggies. All in all if you want to eat everything at once you would need to wait 20min. Still I will return, but a regular we will not be.

I did not enjoy this place last night! BUT this is for one main reason! If you frequent any hibachi place, you’ll know they give you two sauces to dip your food in. No problem, right? Well, I hate these sauces! And Shogun puts the mustard flavored one on EVERYTHING! I’m talking its on your rice, noodles, steak, shrimp, chicken and veggies! Even my wife who loves the sauces didn’t like that they used so much of it! What that said to me is they don’t have the right seasoning so they drench it in sauce. To be fair, I did ask for our cook to leave the sauce off my steak and it was quite good! Just salt, pepper and soy sauce! SIMPLE! Oh well, if you like their sauce you won’t mind. But it’s an awfully strong flavor to just arbitrarily add without asking. Also, the whole restaurant is very dark and pretty empty! Stop drenching all the food in sauce and I’d be more than happy to update my review!

When I was younger my dad and I used I eat sushi here all the time and it was great. However, the sushi chefs left and it all went downhill. My boyfriend and I set a few months ago and sat at the sushi bar. If was horrible. We tried again two weeks ago. Our chef’s name was Ken and he was the best sushi chef I have had in Memphis!!! He loves his work and his customers and it shows in his sushi. My boyfriend and I have been very loyal to our weekly sushi spot pacific rim of two years. Ken has converted us to his sushi and we plan on seeing him once a week. Shogun has really stepped up their game as far as sushi goes. By the way, the torro is phenomenal.
