A comfortable and friendly place to eat and unwind. Certain nights they serve a buffet of ribs and such. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with fries. The food was good and plentiful. The was no real problem with the sandwich other than the fact that there was nothing special about it. There was Cookies bbq sauce available. But again, nothing special about it.

Ok. I am an infrequent visitor to Council Bluffs. Saw this place on Unilocal and since my day starts at 4pm I decided to try a bbq breakfast. I’m a LtL truck driver and have lots of work experience in the food industry(AAS in culinary arts). I’m not a snob… but i know what I like and how things should be. Ok. off the soap box. THISPLACEROCKS!!! I picked 3 things. The Reuben(corned beef. of course) comes with 1 side and I bought an extra. Smoked mac n cheese and Jambalaya. Why? Because if you’re doing BBQ, mac is a must do… and THEY nail it. Smokey, cheesey, and best… a bit of ZIP… also love the diced tomatoes. If you don’t like this… you are closed minded. Its just a wonderful spin on a bbq basic. Now, jambalaya. I make a pretty good batch my self and would/will pay for this!!! Savory, smokey with that pepper balance against the rice and veggies… so good! The Reuben is my snob point… I love them and am picky… that said… it was AWESOME. The best I’ve had in years. Oh, and the service was great. Unconventional. But perfectly attentive and wonderful to see this 3 gal team work as that. Picking up on each other and layered coverage. Bravo! Hog Stop… I tip my hat. When I get back… I will be back.

My wife and I stopped into HogStop on a whim last weekend. My wife and I have been here plenty of other times though. It’s a BBQ joint in a bar. Pretty clean. We walked in and the bar tender greeted us and said that we could seat ourselves. We did and we both knew what we wanted right away. My wife got the pulled pork sandwich and I got their awesome BBQ buffet. It didn’t take long for my wife to get her food, but I went up to the buffet right away. The buffet is only on Fridays,(maybe Saturdays too?), and it was pretty good sized for only $ 15. The buffet had cornbread muffins, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, apple crisp, potato wedges, red beans and rice, jambalaya with turkey and pork, huge cajun meatballs, pulled pork, fried catfish, and big meaty ribs. WELLWORTH $ 15. And the food was hot and good too. Basically all you can eat ribs for $ 15? Count me in! The service was just okay. It took our waitress a little while to get back to us for refills but she was pretty busy. But one thing I liked is that I saw someone from the kitchen check the food on the buffet like every 15 minutes or so, making sure the temps were right and the quantities were there. Very nice to see that! Overall, the food was great and I LOVE the buffet. I will definitely be coming back for the buffet soon!

I have been here several times in the past 3 years. Always had a decent experience. Visited last weekend — I could not believe the food could be so bad. The shaved pork was cold, turkey was extremely dry. Cream corn casserole and mac and cheese were inedible. The baked beans were ok. The once fabulous cornbread was awful. Do not waste your time here.

I have discovered the worst BBQ in the world. Seriously, I am not kidding. My family and I ate at the Hog Stop on June 3, 2014 in the middle of a thunderstorm. My wife and I split the big BBQ feast item. Nothing was good — it was not even real BBQ. Everything clearly was doused with liquid smoke and wasn’t real BBQ. The«shaved pork» was horrid, the chicken was unforgiveable, and the ribs were rubber. The smoked mac n’ cheese was one of the few things I have ever seen my oldest son refuse to eat after a first bite, and I have seen him eat floor food. The creamed corn casserole was terrible. At least the waitress was friendly. I ate half of what I usually do — and I had prodigious amounts of gas all night. I cannot warn people enough about this place — this is my first review on Unilocal — it is the reason I am signing up for this site. DONOTEATHEREEVER.

This place was great. Service was really friendly and the food was fantastic. My boyfriend and I just moved to Omaha from Arizona and were just looking for a decent place to stop for a nice dinner. Walked in and first impression left something to be desired, but once we sat ourselves our very friendly waitress came over and helped us choose our meals. I had one of the best burgers I’ve had in a very long time and my boyfriend had the St. Pattys day special of corn-beef and cabbage and he loved his giant meal that he has plenty left of for lunch tomorrow. I would have no problems coming back here again!

Buffett was well stocked, food was good, not a kid friendly place, note of a older adult type of place.

Good but smoky. I was with a group in search of BBQ and this place delivered. Had a nice array of sauces.

BBQ was decent. Sides were GREAT. The ribs were a little overdone but the riblets were very good. Shaved Pork sandwich was very good. The cornbread was exceptional and the corn casserole was the best thing I had… Baked beans were solid and the smoked Mac and Cheese was also VERY good.

I’m not sure why this place has such a high rating. I went here with some friends for Sunday brunch, and needless to say, it was not my favorite… or anywhere near it for that matter. I shared a 3 meat combo with spicy beans and corn casserole. The shaved pork was alright, the ribs were nothing but fat with a smidge of meat, and the riblets were hard as a rock and about as dry as shoe leather. The meat really didn’t have any flavor to boot. The other problem with this particular event, only two tables had people, including ours, we had a 45 minute wait… and everything we ordered… they didn’t have. We tried to order the gizzards… out. Tried to order the Sunday special NY strip and eggs, at 1230p, they were out of the NY strip. Also out of fried green peppers. The pepperjack cheese sticks were partially lieutenant, and the non-mushy sticks were undercooked. The prices would have been decent… had it been good. Maybe it was an off day for them, but so many mishaps on top of a 45 minute wait for the food just didn’t give me any incentive to give them a second chance.

I’d really like to give Hog Stop 3.5 stars… not quite 4. Stopped in today to check out their BBQ for the first time. Ordered up some of their sliced(naked) pork with smoked mac ‘n cheese and cole slaw(which included a slice of cornbread also). Sliced/shaved pork was very tender with a distinct smoky flavor — matched the great smoky smell inside and out at Hog Stop. After sampling all three BBQ sauces, I went with the Pooh Honey BBQ and mixed in just a bit of the spicy BBQ. Normally I like my BBQ on the spicy side, but their spicy BBQ was more on the smoky side than the tangy/vinegary side(which I prefer). And for some reason the Pooh Honey BBQ just stood out more. Devoured the pork after I covered it in BBQ. Smoked Mac ‘n Cheese didn’t stand a chance. Smoky cheese with elbow macaroni and bits of soft and smoky jalapeo and red pepper. Wow was it good. Cole slaw was also very tasty. It’s hard for a cole slaw to be knockout sometimes, but this was definitely tangy and cool and a nice contrast with the BBQ. Cornbread was great. I covered mine with Country Crock(I wish it was real butter instead) and honey. A great end to the meal. I have to give the edge in the BBQ wars of Council Bluffs to Boxer BBQ, though. Their pulled pork has delicious spicy bark mixed in… and they give you a GIGANTIC pile of it on their sandwiches. Sure the plate costs a bit more, but you get more… and the depth of flavor tops Hog Stop. But again… I really liked my meal at Hog Stop. Good, friendly service. And the Smoked Mac ‘n Cheese is the best side dish at ANY restaurant out there. Stop in just for that. Worth the trip.

The cartoon pig on the restaurant sign, a mascot if you will, was by far the highlight of my trip here. I did take a picture, though, so now I can appreciate his lethargic smile wherever I happen to be. The crowd on a Friday at 8pm was mostly at the bar, but it evened out to half dining patrons and half boozers(which of course I don’t mean in a derogatory way as I’ve been known to booze it up myself). Ultimately it seemed half bar, half restaurant. And I can see why this would be a good place to drink, as the kitchen stays open until 11pm on Friday/Saturday nights. It ended up being one of those meals where the food shows up in quantities larger than expected, yet you manage to power through it quickly and with an efficiency usually reserved for hyenas, and then afterwards say things like, «Huh, I’m not even that full.» but then 10 minutes later, your stomach and gut tells you what really went down. The food was good, but ultimately what makes me settle on 3 stars. I ordered the half rack with smoked mac & cheese, fried pepper rings, and texas toast(on special for $ 10). Usually I like to gauge a BBQ place by the pork sandwich but Bill ordered that for me… with fries in the side, so I wanted something different. I tried it all, and it was just average to me. The meat, which obviously should be the star of the show, had clearly been cooked and cooked and cooked(and cooked), but there was too much fat. No other way to say it. So of course I was disappointed, based on the previous ratings, but it was still a fine meal and cheap at $ 20 for two.

We were in Omaha for the night staying in Council Bluffs, and after a long day at the zoo(awesome) we wanted something easy and close for dinner. After a bit of Unilocaling, we stumbled upon Hog Stop and decided to try it. It’s not a fancy place, but it was rather busy when we got there.(i think half of the crowd was there for thr band that showed up around 8). Our waitress was great, explaining the available sauces and the best meats and sides. We ordered draft beer(bud light is the only draft beer offered) and the pepperjack cheese sticks to start. The sticks came with marinara sauce, which didn’t really fit in my opinion, so I mixed the Hawaiian sauce(honey mustard-y) with their hot BBQ sauce. We ordered 2– 2 meat plates($ 12 each) which come with 2 sides and cornbread or Texas toast. The meats were so-so. The shaved sirloin was my favorite of the meats we ordered with the shaved pork coming in second. there were 3BBQ sauces to choose from plus the Hawaiian sauce. The star of the dinner was the cornbread and sides. The cornbread was very moist and almost corn pudding like. We also got the smoked Mac and cheese which was absolutely heavenly. The waitress told us they put the pan of Mac and cheese on the rack above the meat in the smoker. The potato salad was also good — it had fresh pieces of celery and onion and bacon pieces! The cream cheese corn casserole was good and tasted very similar to the cornbread. This was a great find that I will visit again if I am ever in Omaha. Next visit I think I won’t even bother with the meat and just get the amazing sides!

We were staying nearby and searched for restaurants on Unilocal. The previous review made our mouths water so we thought we’d give it a try. After we got out of the car, you could smell the wood smoke so we knew it was going to be good! The place has a hometown bar feel and is very spacious. We seated ourselves and started with an appetizer of Pepperjack Cheesesticks. They were awesome! For dinner, I had the sliced turkey dinner with smoked mac n cheese, cream cheese corn casserole and corn bread. My fiancé had the shaved beef sirloin dinner with smoked mac n cheese, cream cheese corn casserole and corn bread. We ranked what we thought was the best item from appetizer on: My fiancé: 1. Corn Bread 2. Pepperjack Cheesesticks 3. Shaved Beef Sirloin 4. Mac n’ Cheese 5. Cream Cheese Corn Casserole Me: 1. Corn Bread 2. Pepperjack Cheesesticks 3. Mac n’ Cheese 4. Sliced Turkey 5. Cream Cheese Corn Casserole The Corn Bread was AMAZING!!! I wasn’t the biggest fan of the meat but it wasn’t bad either. The Cream Cheese Corn Casserole was good but not great. For the amount of food you get, it was very reasonable! Before tip, our bill was under $ 30 for two of us(included a large draft beer). The service was very friendly and prompt. If we are back in town, we will definitely consider dropping in again!

Just noticed this new place the other day. Stopped in tonight and everything was great. Started with fried pickles — they do a great job with these here. Next a shaved beef dinner with smoked mac n cheese and corn casserole and a shaved pork dinner with potato salad and beans. The meat was different having it shaved but it was very good. The mac n cheese was very good, the corn casserole was great, potato salad & beans were both homemade and very good. Service was good and beer was ice cold. I will definately be back. The daily special was a open face hot pork sandwich and it looked awesome — covered in cream gravy.
