I visited the emergency room to get stitches Friday afternoon. They were amazing. I was checked in & taken back within 10 minutes of getting there. The emergency room staff was so nice, so attentive to my needs & I was out within 45 minutes getting there

The doctors were nice but I had to wait 2 hours in the lobby and there was no wait. And then I had to wait about 3 hours to get discharged from the hospital.

Go here if you like price gouging. I went to the emergency room one night after not being able to sleep due to a rapidly worsening throat infection. I was unable to speak and and trouble breathing. A doctor came, did a throat culture, diagnosed the infection, and, after much coaxing from me, prescribed an antibiotic. I was in and out in less than an hour. The bill: $ 1,100. $ 900 for the emergency room and throat culture, $ 200 for the doctor. UPMC bills you for each separately. I called the customer service number to ask why the bill was so high. The customer service representative said that«the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services»(i.e. the federal government) sets the rate. I told him that I am not on Medicare or Medicaid. He said that it did not matter. The government sets the rate. Really? The federal government now sets the rate for medical treatment in the US regardless of whether the patient is paying out of her own pocket? After more probing questioning, I teased out of the customer service representative that the federal government sets the maximum amount that a hospital may charge a patient covered by Medicare and Medicaid, and that UPMC *chooses* to charge this maximum to all patients, regardless of whether the patient is on Medicare or Medicaid or pays with private insurance or out of her own pocket. Good to know.
