Camp Paivika is sleep away camp for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. My son(at 13) has never been away from home, and having a special needs child, this is really a big deal so as you can imagine, I was apprehensive about leaving him anywhere by himself. I was introduced to Camp Paivika through Ability First which is a program my son attends and which is really awesome. My son’s first trip to Camp Paivika and all I can say is even the drop off was awesome! All the staff cheered as every person drove up. This was my child’s first chance to go to a sleep away camp and I was nervous. The counselors set me at ease and even took me on a trip to see their rooms and had no problem with me staying as long as I liked until I felt comfortable. They took a genuine interest in any problems or issues he may have his first trip away from home. I want to give a shout-out to both Kelly’s(Kelly Privett and Kelly Kunsuk) for making our first experience so awesome and memorable. The staff was so friendly and professional.. I waved and kissed goodbye for his first trip away from home without tears. I checked in daily through email and all the pictures I saw of my child were totally glowing. He looked like he was having so much fun, I was not sure if he’d even want to come home ;) I want anyone to know that you should checkout this camp. This camp is designed for us and our kids. For any parents, caregivers with children with special needs, I can’t think of a better place. There is not anything that they can’t do here! If you want to focus on your child’s abilities instead of disabilities. what your child can do, instead of what they can’t — Camp Paivika is the place for you! Thanks to the staff at Ability First and Camp Paivika. We are so glad for the opportunity to be a part of this camp. :)
