If you want a big delicious breakfast, this is the place. Served family style, it was far more than we could eat. With 3 kinds of meat, 2 kinds of gravy, eggs, pancakes, potato wedges, grits, huge fluffy biscuits, preserves and apple butter — I am astonished anyone gets reorders– but they do(I heard it at the next table). Based on the quality of all the food alone, this should be a five star. Unfortunately people come from far and wide, so popular that we had a 45 minute wait to be seated, and then the host neglected to assign a waitress to the table. That caused another 15 minute delay before my wife took action. Once my wife got that straightened out we had a very nice and attentive waitress. I would definitely go back when in the area.

Good wholesome food served up family style. It’s like mama’s home cooking served up in bowls and baskets. The fried chicken was awesome, and the biscuits are the 2nd best I’ve ever had, next to Mom’s of course. If you’re ever in West Jefferson, NC, ask anyone about it. I’ll be back!

A must do when visiting this part of North Carolina. Our server explained we could order off the menu or order family style breakfast for 10.95 each. We chose family style and next thing you know a CART with food rolled up to our table. Eggs, biscuits, gravy, grits, potatoes, apples, pancakes, grits, bacon, ham and sausage were at our finger tips. Also provided was apple butter, strawberry preserves, syrup, and red eye gravy. My favorite were the apples and my husband loved the potatoes. We enjoyed eating like little piggies and still had enough leftover to take home two doggie bags. Needless to say we will be having breakfast for dinner tonight.

Very interesting place, looks like an old barn back in the woods. The food is great. The place usually has customers waiting so you know they have a great reputation. It’s not unusual seeing buses dropping people off. It has plenty of seating.

Hallie was the saving grace for this night that was from hell. We made a reservation for a party of 10 earlier in the day as we knew it would be a challenge when we arrived. We also knew there would be some wait. We arrived and checked in and saw at least one table to 10 set and thought that would be ours. We waited for over an hour and that 10 top stayed open the whole time. Around 8:15pm we were seated at that table that was open the entire time. I think my nephew may have helped us finally get seated as he walked by the door as a couple was leaving and said, «I want to eat too!» Considering we had 3 kids that were 3… we managed to keep them occupied till we were finally seated. The age of the children were noted when we made the reservation. Once in we were greeted by Hallie and she helped turn the night around. While the bread was still baking she got us started in the family style dinner. She kept everything coming and we were eating by 8:30pm. Once inside we realized the issue was short staffing in the dining room AND the kitchen. Had that been noted when we arrived. We could have made a decision to take our party someplace else. Instead when we checked in 30 and 45 mins after our reservation time we were greeted with a short and terse replay that they were busy. While the food was good, I was not that impressed with front of house. I get they are a small time operation, but they know if they are short staffed they know they will not be running the dining room at full capacity. Hallie was the true saving grace. She told us the issues and we understood. No need to rush back when the Daniel Boone Inn serves the same style food. And while no reservations accepted, always seems to accommodate a full house.

It’s a greasy spoon establishment tucked in the mountains in a sort of kitschy gift shop/cabin/dining room arrangement with a duck pond out back. The cabins looked positively creepy but the staff were friendly enough and the food was decent. I recommend ordering family style. Plenty to eat, although some dishes stood out while others were forgettable. It’s a place you’d be better off going to in a group versus being a couple or single diner.

The only positive I can comment is the fried chicken. What a shame. 90 sanitation score was a give away. Think twice before eating here if you are wanting a good meal.

Went today and it was an experience! Gorgeous setting, wonderful waitress, and family style food was an awesome concept. Definitely make an appointment ahead of time. I’m giving this place 3 stars because 1) not all of the food is homemade and you can definitely tell. Tasted like canned corn and the Mac & cheese was definitely velveeta. With the price of $ 18, I expected better quality. It was mainly just quantity. 2) the waitress told me they only had sweet/unsweet tea, but then I saw the table next to us get milk, chocolate milk, and decaf/regular coffee. Had a great time though! Enjoyed it(we drove 2hours there and back)!

Just went on 7÷11÷15. Should have known to leave when I first went to the restroom and of the 4 toilets, 2 were overflowing and out of order, but stayed anyway. Have been there before, and know the restaurant well, but like any place, it must be kept up from time to time. This place is a dump and is getting worse with time. It is badly in need of repair, the floors sag and when we were leaving, was walking from one room to another and almost fell, as the floors are sagging so badly that they are inches off from each other. And as to the food, what can I say? Mediocre at best. Biscuits are chewy, fried chicken was average. Green beans straight out of a can, mashed potatoes may have been from potatoes, but never had milk and butter added, only water, so very flat. Waitress never even offered us dessert. This restaurant has raked in gobs of money over the years, yet they have never put a cent back into the business, and it shows. The flies have been around so long they must all be named. Poor food, poor service. Price for the dinner, including tax, is $ 20 per person. Far, far too much for what you get. Want a good family style place like this? Daniel Boone Inn in Boone, NC. Classy place, great food, and puts this place to shame. Spend your money there.

When you are looking for some comfort food this is the place for you. They were kind enough to make room on the reservation list for us on Thanksgiving Day. I begged them, and they were able to fit us in. Loved every single bite. It is not just a meal it is a fun family experience.

Delicious hot meal and incredibly friendly folks. Numerous locals insisted we try this place, and I’m so glad we did. All three of my hungry children(including teenagers) practically rolled out of there after eating a feast of fried chicken and ham plus seven sides! Great after a long day on the river!

Last time I ate here I got extremely sick so I have yet to go back nor do I feel the need to, kind of touristy for my liking anyways… and to be honest, the food really isn’t good so I don’t understand how anyone would like it.

This is our favorite place to eat at when in Ashe county, especially for breakfast. It is served«family style», which means that they have a preplanned menu, they bring some of everything to your table, and all you have to do is ask for refills on anything for free. The upside to the place is that it is very large, but they staff it with enough waiters/waitresses to keep the food flowing. The downside to the place is that it is only open April thru November. They do have a menu you can order from, but come hungry, eat the spread, and leave happy is my recommedation!

So I was back again to try this landmark place that’s known for its family style meals of good olé southern comfort food. Fried chicken, country ham, mashed potatoes, collards along with all the other great traditional favorites are what you come to this place for. At least that’s what people used to come to this place for way back when. I’ve never been here when the food was amazing. To me it’s strictly average and there are much better places to get the same thing. The food didn’t seem as fresh as it could be, it wasn’t piping hot, more room temperature. I ordered the chicken tenders, I have had the bone in traditional fried chicken too, and the tenders were good. Probably pre-packaged and frozen when arriving at the restaurant so taste wise, ok. The fried chicken wasn’t served hoy and it was somewhat greasy. It came with a couple sides so I got the mashed potatoes and coleslaw. The mashed potatoes were definitely the best thing on the plate. You could literally taste the stick of butter they used for the scoop on my plate. I love butter, so it worked for me. The coleslaw was good, not really sweet, something I hate about coleslaw so I liked the version they served. Biscuits and cornbread came with each meal too. I had a biscuit and it was a little dense and they really needed to put butter on the table. The atmosphere is definitely rustic. I don’t think they’ve changed or updated really since the place was built forever ago. Unfortunately I don’t think the food warrants the prices they charge and is just not great so I would not recommend this place to people. It’s a shame because it’s such a landmark place back there that people know. I don’t plan on going back anytime soon.

First off, if you have a motorcycle or convertible, take this trip up here. It’s about a 2 hour trip from Greensboro with beautiful scenery and a great ride. When you get there, you’ll have a nice big feast of fried chicken, country ham, green beans, brown beans, corn, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, cabbage, biscuits, fried apples, homemade strawberry jam, and two types of gravy waiting on a table for you. When you stuffed yourself silly, they kindly remind you about their apple, strawberry, peach, and blackberry cobblers, and banana and Oreo puddings for dessert. And for the reviewer who said he only got one piece… just ask for more! they let you have more AND let you take it home! It’s $ 16.95 for lunch and dinner, cash only, with an ATM on the premises(fees accessed). They told us we had a 25 minute wait yesterday but we were seated within 3… it was the shortest wait ever! This is an annual motorcycle trip for the hubby and I. If you’ve ever been to Daniel Boone Inn and liked it, you’ve gotta check this place out! Also, the place is situated by a natural spring with fresh water with a story of healing qualities. People come with giant jus to take this stuff back home with them. Regardless, the water is fresh and cold and they have it set up from a spout so you can bottle it yourself! While I love this place is in the middle of no where, that means no checking in for Unilocalers… there’s no service up there!

This place was sooo applauded by everyone who was here, so i came w my fam and we tried it. Its definitely no more than 3 stars. The roast beef wasn’t very good. The mash i personally think it was processed. The famous biscuits … Not good. They had a bitterly taste and even w all the butter and gem, they were still bitter. The good part of this restaurant is the FRIEDCHICKEN!!! Its the only reason this place deserves the 3 stars. Its salted and moist and cooked all the way through! And the batter is also reallllly good!

Amazing! Everything made w some serious love in it. Some of the best fried chicken and fresh creamed corn that I’ve ever had. This was my first vist. Baked sugar cured country ham, shattering crisp and tender fried chicken, 8 assorted vegetables, biscuits and bananna pudding or your choice of three other fruit cobblers. All served family style with refills of your choice available by asking. $ 16.75, cash or checks only. Kid’s menu and meat and 2 veg plates available also for very reasonable prices.

Me and my family discovered Shatley Springs after living close to this area for 10 years. We enjoy the country atmosphere and setting of Shatley Springs. We always take a jug of the healing spring water home with us. Shatley Springs offers a menu or an all-you-can-eat family style dinner. The family style dining comes with fried chicken and country ham plus side dishes, drink(They do not have soda! Only Water, Tea, Milk or Coffee) and dessert for $ 16.95 per person. We’ve started going there for special occasions and holidays. We went on Mother’s Day this year. It was crowded, we put our name on the list and was told it could be up to a 2 hour wait. It actually only ended up being about an hour. We just hung out in the little gift shop and out on the porch in the rocking chairs until it was time to eat. Sometimes they have live music on the porch. I have to admit that the food has been better on some occasions than others. It was actually pretty good this time around. The waitresses are usually very friendly. A couple of things about the food tho… They only serve fried chicken breasts, if you want a leg or some dark meat, you have to ask for it and sometimes they will give you a leg and sometimes not. And yes the mashed potatoes do seem to be instant. The only other item I have ordered from the menu was a pizza for my kids once. It was actually pretty decent for $ 7.00, I will try to post a picture of that. Also, I believe this is a cash only type of place. They have an ATM on site but they do not accept credit or debit cards. I believe they do accept credit/debit in the gift shop but not in the restaurant area.

I want to go back! Who can argue with piles and piles of awesome country-style chow served by the friendliest staff anywhere?!? Everything was served hot and fast and we all loved every minute of our visit. This place is just simply charming but with a down-home feel I have not experienced anywhere for a long while; which says a lot considering this place is quite large and can accomodate some crowds for sure! The only beef I have is that the still don’t take credit or debit cards… really?!? Go now!
