A growing library The Cumberland library was opened in 1921 and was constructed in a basic, brick colonial style with some granite trim and a nice slate roof. Very pleasant but it wasn’t exceptional large and over the decades it become obvious that a larger library was needed. Fortunately there was room on the property to expand so expand they did. Major additions in 1959,1987 and1996 increased the size of the library dramatically. The library is long and rambling with lots of interior space so there is plenty of room to move around and not be crowded. The original part is still open and makes quite an interesting contrast to the rest of the building. The library has lovely areas to read with lots of plants and natural light as well as a great area for kids, complete with huge stuffed critters and play areas. An interesting library that has grown and expand along with the town of Cumberland. It will be interesting to see if it continues to expand in the future.
