I’m glad that Tanya C. provided such good information about this event, as I arrived late and only witnessed the doughnut-eating portion. I watched Brent H. incredulously as he ate fried rings of buttermilk cake without a worry in the world. His competitors were obviously struggling, with one poor man displaying alternating looks of repugnance and impotence. I give it to him though, while he did not win, his continuing in the contest in spite of what must have been physical agony was admirable. At the end of the 15 minutes, Brent popped in that 41st doughnut as if it were just another piece of fresh fruit. I never imagined that an eating contest winner would chow down this way. You see, this may have been the very first eating contest that I have watched, in real life or on TV(being that I have never seen one on the telly). I imagined that it would have been a chunks-of-doughnuts-and-saliva-flying-left-and-right type of occasion. I was immensely pleased that this did not go down. If I am in the area next year for Independence Day, I would highly consider coming back for this event. Brent seemed pretty intent on competing again, to add to his growing collection of trophies. Getting there earlier, to see the other activities that Dutch Monkey plans, is probably the course of action to take. So keep that in mind. (By the way, since many contestants are unable to get through even half of the doughnuts placed before them, there are a good number of buttermilk cake doughnuts just hanging around. I go on record as eating 2 of the buttermilk ones and 1 chocolate cake doughnut. All delicious, as you would expect from Dutch Monkey.)

The Guru of Glaze has done it again. Brent H. is the champion for the second year in a row. He ate a whopping 41 doughnuts — 10 more than last year. This is a great place to celebrate the 4th of July. There’s cookout(BBQ, hot dogs) with all money from sales being donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The big festivities center around the doughnut eating competitions. They start off with the small kids. They each have a doughnut and have to eat it with their hands behind their backs. They all seemed to have a ball and you just want to eat up all the gooey cuteness. Next up are the employee competitions. The first consisted of running around the building with a 50 pound sack of flour. I’m not sure how they convinced three guys to participate in this, but they did. The second was a doughnut eating competition. The competitors had 5 minutes to eat as many chocolate cake doughnuts as possible. There was a last minute twist where they were told that they had to keep their hands behind their backs as well. The winner ate about 17 doughnuts in 5 minutes. That’s just crazy. The big competition was the official doughnut eating challenge. The contestants had 15 minutes to eat as many cake doughnuts as possible. Five individuals challenged the Guru of Glaze this year. One of those challengers was the Guru’s Father — the Gladiator of Glaze. They gave a good effort, but were not up for the doughnut eating beast. They probably didn’t train. Poor guys. Congrats Brent H. on your win!
