One of the problems of visiting a small island is that you have no place to spend your money. No expensive restaurants, no clubs, no bars, no snooty clothing stores and no fancy excursions. How the hell do you waste your hard earned cash around here? Fortunately The Corner Store comes to the rescue. It’s largest store on the island, but then almost everything else is a few local people selling stuff from their front porches. The Corner Store is the«real» store. And it is a good place to blow some money. Of course it has the usual tourist crap like refrigerator magnets, shirts, cups with sail boats on them and funny hats and shoes. Also plenty of beachy stuff like plastic pails and toys, but The Corner Store also has some very interesting and more artistic items, including some cool books and great copies of new and old maps. The maps alone make the store worth seeking out and definitely makes a much more interesting gift than a plastic lobster or bobble head crab. One particular fascinating section is called Cuttyhunk crafts. Some very nice jewelry, clothing and other craft items made by the local artists of the island. Some original and very creative work. So I did end up blowing a lot of money in this place. Gifts for friends and more than a few things for myself. I now have a cool, old map of Cuttyhunk hanging on my library’s wall and even a stupid shirt than says Cuttyhunk on it. Hey, you have to waste some money when you travel. That’s part of the fun.
