This was the only open place in Cuttyhunk that we knew of when we first arrived, so I give it five stars for helping us bridge the gap for breakfast so we would have something to eat. There’s a good variety here; we had the potato salad which was nice, there’s water, drinks, convenience supplies, etc. But the hours are worth verifying out so you can make sure to get what you need upon arrival. The couple at the counter were very nice.

It’s always called«The Market.» Never anything else. And it’s the only game in town. Or at least on Cuttyhunk Island. There are a few other places to get prepared food on the island but if you want milk, soap, potato chips or toilet paper this is the place to go. The only place to go. As expected, it’s small, dark and not very organized. Stuff everywhere, and one back room in particular looks like a bomb went off in it. But if you dig around you can usually find what you want or at least what you need to survive another day on the island. They also have a little deli. Nothing elaborate, just basic sandwiches and some fruit and veggies. Just enough to keep you going. You can take the sandwiches outside and eat them on a small, uncomfortable bench. Usually with several large, stinky but very friendly dogs watching hopefully. Bare minimum accommodations. The store will usually have some junk food like donuts and chips and usually have some type of ice cream but it all depends. Health and beauty aids are pretty much suntan lotion, bug spray and aspirin. The market is so small you can’t walk in with a large list. You frequently have to improvise and work around what they have. Not much of a store, probably looks and operates just like it did decades ago. About all you can expect on a small, desolate island like Cuttyhunk. Enough to keep you going. But if you run out of milk, fruit, soap or God forbid toilet paper, you better know where this place is, cause there ain’t no place else.
