price was good, good meat, bread, fries, okra, sauce is spicy and no alternative was offered, so watch out — tables are worn down if you care about that — I’m not bothered –staff good

After months of utter disappointment in finding any BBQ brisket in Colorado that did not taste of beef jerky(I attribute the dryness to low moisture at altitude which results in low moisture content in the wood for smoking and meat that dries out easily), I found this place 5 hours away from Denver! We have to make day trips to Dalhart once per month, so this is my new BBQ place. Not only is it very good compared to the shoe leather up here, but it’s good by any Texas standards. The sides are fresh and tasty, the BBQ brisket sandwich had meat shaved with a deli slicer! Why have I never thought of this(don’t say Arby’s!)? It literally melted in my mouth requiring very little chewing. The tea was good and the friendly staff did not flinch at my request for half/half sweet tea! :-) Don’t eat in Trinidad or Amarillo and save your hunger for this place.

After reading the reviews, we came here to get carry out on a snowy night. What a great choice. This is a unique local dining experience. We had the three meat platter, chicken fried steak and a ham sandwich. All were excellent. Great value for the money. The service was superb. The wait staff was friendly and warm. They did their jobs quickly. But they were also quite personable. I would make a point of stopping here to eat whatever the reason I was coming through here.

Stopped by here on a whim and ate a late lunch. The brisket was very good and so much food that no dinner was eaten later that night.

Excellent sliced beef. Sandwich bun fell apart with the sauce on it, so get your sauce in the side. Great tea too.

Just when I’d about lost faith in a barbecue place making brisket that isn’t dried out, I find myself passing through Dalhart about dinner time. Hodies thin sliced brisket is a beacon of hope that brisket can actually be tasty, tender, moist, and flavorful. And the sides are unusually good too. The fishing décor is fun, atmosphere friendly, location a bit odd(I’m guessing it was a gas station in the fifties) but worth the stop, and worth another visit when I pass through again.

We stayed in Dalhart and picked Hodies to eat dinner and it was a good choice. Every restaurant in town was packed so I got it to go. It took a little longer but the Chicken Fried Steak was worth it. Along with the chicken fingers and chopped bbq beef this was a big hit with the whole family. The place looks shady but the people were great and it was yummy.

I think there is a rule in Texas that for a town to incorporate, they must have a barbeque place. In Dalhart, Hodies is that place. They have good food at a decent price, and the atmosphere is fine. It definitely represents Texas well on the map. I am hesitant to go to 4 stars simply because it is a high bar to clear when we’re talking about Texas barbeque. While Hodies delivers good food, it doesn’t quite reach the iconic level.

We chose Hoodies for lunch based on Unilocal reviews and were not disappointed. The brisket was excellent, the slaw tasty, but while the beans were rather bland, the addition of a couple of onion rings to the plate won me over.

I’m always looking for strategic places to stop between DFW and Colorado. I’ve been researching Hodies a bit and it hit this time right about lunch. You won’t find this BBQ up there in the same atmosphere as Franklin’s or other BBQ joints in Texas, but beats McDonalds’s, DQ, Sonic, and other stops along the way. I did notice some flies. Between Wichita Falls and Raton NM, it seems most places have some flies. The locales seem immune to them. When the waitress went to the back I took a newspaper and killed the two or three I saw buzzing around my table. The chopped brisket was very lean and above average, but the BBQ sauce is below average. Tasted a bit like Hines 57 to meet my taste. They served homemade style fired potatoes. I liked them alot but had to add some salt and pepper. The beans are very bland as with most of the food and require some doctoring with salt and spices. The wait staff did not acknowledge my existence initially. A locale just stammered sit where ever you want. When the waitress came, she was efficient and we got our food very quickly. I liked the home town atmosphere and food is fine but a bit bland and will stop there again. Was in and out in about 30 minutes with a full belly. Friend who went with me had the lunch special which was a Mexican style sausage. I tried some and it was pretty tasty.

Read the other reviews on Unilocal and decided to stop here. Glad we did. Yes it’s a small town atmosphere, not much to look at, but the food an service is great. I have never eaten a BBQ sandwich with the portions here. They do not cut corners on the meat. The other reviews are totally accurate about the tenderness of the brisket… excellent. If you are driving through Dalhart don’t miss this place.

Not much to see here. Character. 3***, it’s an old building, no telling how many establishments it’s been over the years. Decent character, 3*** Service, 3***, good table service but had to wait 2 or 3 minutes for somebody to return to the counter so we could pay the bill. Food, 2** brisket sandwich and a side of beans. The brisket was sliced thin, probably 1/32″. Pale smoke ring, maybe 1/8″ deep. No bark, rub, fat, or flavor. It was tender but anything that’s paper thin will be. Sauce was ketchup, vinegar, honey with a splash of Tabasco. Decent sauce and with the fresh burger bun was the only thing that made this sandwich worthwhile, 3***. Canned beans, 1*. Value 3*** sandwich is 4.29 for about 6 or 7 ounces. Would not recommend coming for the Q but there nothing else in town either.

Best thinly sliced brisket, fresh coleslaw and potato salad. Hot beans on the side — all for $ 8.99. Can’t beat that! James from Pearland TX

I love this place. In full disclosure, the last time I was here was in October of 2011, but I still thought a review was appropriate. I used to travel through Dalhart a few times a month, and this was my favorite place to go. Bar H is also a popular hangout for the frequent panhandle travelers; if you want to sit down to a steak, it is great. Hodies, however, is great bbq at a great price. The brisket is always tasty and tender, you can tell it was done right. My favorite part though is the beans. They are like nothing I have found anywhere else. Maybe it is a Texas thing, but it is a very different style than we have in KC. They alone would be worth my time to go there. As other have noted, it is not fancy, but the food is good and that is what matters most for this guy. I am hungry just thinking about it.

Good Barbecue Sandwiches-good lean brisket & nice smoke. They need Jalapeño sausage to satisfy most Texans. Better than average and a nice surprise!

Food was OK. We also noted the flies which I thought would be gone by November. What concerned me the most about the place was that the waitress did not give us a check. We paid at the counter and she just told us the total and asked if I wanted to add a tip to the credit card. I think the total was too high after leaving and just came away feeling that I had got taken…

There’s not a lot of original options in Dalhart. The sign entering town says they’ve got a population of around 7,000. This place is pretty divey, however, the parking lot is packed every day at lunch and it’s tough to find a table(seat yourself, but they have waitresses). Inside, you’ll find the basics. Tables of varying sizes, cafeteria style chairs, and cement floors. No décor to speak of. It’s a restaurant in a box with windows blinded by shades that are decades old and loaded with crud. It is what it is. The staff are friendly. The menu, not so much. A lot of «NO Substitutions and NO ½ orders» and the like. It’s pretty cheap though. You can stuff yourself for under $ 5 by ordering a simple sandwich. The meat is flavorful. The sauce is just so-so. The buns for sandwiches are just hamburger buns. Nothing fancy at all. Flies are common in this part of the country so you get used to them. Yes, this place has plenty, but so do many others… including McDonalds. It’s not a clean place to eat nor is the food that good or memorable. If you’re expecting to find a wonderfully unexpected experience, you won’t find it here. It’s going to be as good as it looks… which is to say, «Below Average».

We stopped here for lunch on our way to denver colorado. This small town After getting pulled over by the policeman, we drove to this spot not to far from where i pulled in and got hodies bbq. I picked this joint only because there seemed to be where all the locals were eating. I ordered the brisket dinner. I thought everything was actually pretty good. The brisket was pretty fatty i admit but it was nice and smokey and tasty. The portions were pretty generous. The brisket was pretty juicy and tender. My only complaint is that the BBQ Sauce. The BBQ sauce was on the ketchupy side. It tasted like ketchup vinegar and honey.
