It’s fantastic. The space itself is absolutely gorgeous. The people are very nice. The food is fantastic and the drinks are just as good. There are a number of Mexican or Tex-Mex options in the downtown area — Iron Cactus(ugh), Sol Irlandes(mediocre), Wild Salsa(pretty good, but can be hit or miss) and now Agave Azul. You might miss it because it’s not on Main, but over on the corner of Wood and Harwood toward the Farmer’s Market. It’s in the Lone Star Gas Lofts building, it’s got a nice looking patio(especially at night), and it is definitely worth the walk — they’re another step forward for the downtown/Farmer’s Market renaissance. Jed B. is right: GETHERENOW!!! Best Mexican food downtown, and very consistent — if you live in the neighborhood, you owe it yourself to try them at least once. Get the tamarind margarita. You won’t regret it.

I went with a group of coworkers and we had a great time and the food was great too. Due to my limited time and sitting on the patio, I did not see the inside but have heard it’s nicely done. The only thing that bothered us was that they served our meal on pieces of board(think small wooden cutting board) instead of a plate. Even a paper plate would have been better because the general consensus was that it seemed unclean. We all wondered if they wiped it down with bleach after every use. I can’t imagine sticking a piece of wood like that in the dishwasher. Other than that, I recommend this place.

Mahi Mahi was delicious along with the accompanying vegetables. Hubby had chicken enchiladas-and they were very flavorful and tasty. We will definitely be back and I will definitely have to try their mixed drinks on the pretty patio one evening. P. S.–the salsa was great also.

We came here as part of the opening of Lone Star Gas Lofts next door. They had cleared out the dining room tables and chairs, and had a generous complimentary buffet of tacos, nachos and cheese, flautas, enchiladas, chimchangas, and tamales. They were also passing shrimp and fish ceviche on a large nacho, and a shrimp cocktail. All of the food was hot and tasty. The passed ceviche was very fresh. The shrimp cocktail sauce had just the right tangyness and had the added novelty of a thinly sliced piece of avocado threaded onto the pick holding the shrimp. The tamales were excellent. The chicken taco was on a very delicate white corn tortilla, and the cilantro sauce was excellent. We did not try the enchiladas or chimchangas. The nachos were large and the cheese was hot with just the right amount of picante. They also had a dessert buffet which included Mexican style cakes and cookies. The cookies were especially good because they were not too sweet. A tray of mint flavored chocolate truffles topped it all off so well. Because we brought our drinks over from the Lone Star Gas Lofts opening we did not order from the bar, so cannot comment on the drinks. I saw a couple of the margaritas and they looked good, and a person drinking one said they are made with fresh limes. I cannot end this review without commenting on the friendly staff. Every one was very nice and helpful, and made us feel very welcome, even though we were not paying at all for their food and service. They had a nice patio setting, but we did not sit out there because it was a very humid evening. Definitely will return as a paying customer to confirm this good experience.

First impression is always the toughest! I was immediately impressed with the first phone call I made. I had a large party I was trying to feed and had the EASIEST time setting up with Agave Azul’s manager, Eric! He was so accommodating and the staff was on top of every drink and food order! The staff brought complimentary tequila shots for everyone! We all ordered drinks and the food was ONPOINT! I’m Hispanic and so was the majority of our group so we know what good TeX Mex, Authentic and good and crappy«Mexican» food tastes like. Food was great and creative menu! My cilantro lime rice could’ve used a little more steaming but other than that my food was delicious! Everyone was very impressed and full! We will be back for the hospitality, tasty dishes and great service!

Came here a few weeks ago for the soft opening and really enjoyed myself. Figured I wait to write a review till they were fully opened. Came back Saturday because the patio was calling my name. Figured a few of their delicious margaritas(pineapple serrano is the best!!) and some chips and queso. We also ended up order some table side guacamole. Which is a huge portion and very very fresh. Previously we had tried the carnitas tortas, the shrimp tacos, charred peppers, and the calamari during the soft opening, so I am excited to go back and try the full menu. The only thing I haven’t cared for so far is the chipotle margarita, its too smokey for my taste, but the rest of their drinks are made fresh and just strong enough!

I believe they are having an identity crisis between the TexMex Agave Azul in Carrollton and the«fusion» Mexican menu the chef is trying to accomplish under the same brand. Staff was super nice, but no one is really aware of what’s on the menu. When we sat down, the host provided 3 different versions of the menu — and still wasn’t a clear picture of what’s going on in the kitchen. To get to the point… We were served French fries with our meals — which weren’t entrees, because they only offered 1 entrée total; the Mole. They didn’t even have queso available, and they’re response was«we’re not doing that tonight». We are talking about melted cheese here, not a signature dish. The Chef must have spotted our puzzled looks after receiving our meals — and we didn’t complain, so I give him credit for checking in on us. He could tell we were confused by the menu, and began to tell us that he wishes they could use a different name, as it causes confusion with the expectation of already recognized name… That’s the reason we went there! He was nice enough to provide a couple free appetizers, but truth be told — it was all lackluster. I’m not sure where all the initial 5-star reviews come from — I imagine it’s friends and family, but I don’t think I’ll be returning anytime soon. It’s tough when you’re truly excited to try out a new restaurant that looks promising, and then discover it’s a complete disappointment.

Everything here is so fresh & unique. They came to downtown from their Carrollton location & they take pride in what they serve from the kitchen to the bar. They have no huge overhead, it’s word of mouth, so here goes my mouth telling you how unique their dishes/cocktails are. If you appreciate what is good then you will appreciate this place. CUTE bathrooms 2. I love the bathroom countertops w/lights coming through the recycled glass. Beautiful. A lot of thought went into the place.

OK, so I’ve tried this place several times now… It’s new and I’m not ready to write it off because there are goods, but there is the bad as well. First, the menu… it’s clearly chef inspired Mexican. The tacos are simple, but great. I’ve tried the burger, which is pretty good, and they have an awesome Brussel sprout appetizer that tastes better than it looks. The bad part of the menu is that it’s limited. I’m ok with a limited menu, but I can see adding a few things to round it out. The ambiance is great… the entire place is new and decorated nicely. The patio, with it’s amazing blue tree is excellent. Now, the bad is the overall service. The staff seems to have been hired freshly, meaning no experience. It certainly shows, as they take a while and the back and forth chatter is uncomfortable at times. They are not all well versed on the operations and details of offerings. One of the best things of this new gem is the bar offerings. Again, you have to watch the wait staff, as they sometimes don’t know the menu, including the bar menu well, but the drinks are amazing. Not too strong, but you can definitely taste the tequila. At the very least, try them out for a happy hour. The place is new, so if you go in with an open mind, you’ll enjoy. I plan on trying it out a few more times, to see the improvements as they break in the staff and finalize the menu. Added bonus is the receptive and strong management here… they float around and check on diners, sometimes offering up samples of items you inquire about.

I was excited that this edge of downtown was getting a restaurant to hopefully start bridging the gap between the Main Street district and the farmers market. Unfortunately, what we ended up with is a mediocre quasi Mexican restaurant. They have been open a month or so and mostly only serve tacos and pretty sub par ones at that. Today was my 2nd attempt at this place. The 1rst attempt was on the 2nd day they were open and it was a huge disappointment. We went in and were promptly seated, but no one came by. We were given chips/salsa and water, but a waiter never came. Finally after 10min I got up to track someone down and found someone who looked like a manager, but didn’t care about the lack of service like one. I saw him ask a waitress to help us, but there was no urgency to come check on us. Another 10min goes by and someone finally takes our drink order. 10min later, still no drinks. At this point we were full of chips and water, we cut our losses and bailed. Being reasonable people we decided to give this place another try. This time we sat at the bar thinking the service would be better. The service was good this time I will say, no complaints there in fact it was above average, except for delayed chips and salsa. This time we actually ate off the pretty limited menu. My wife got the fried rice and after a few bites didn’t want anymore. She sent is back very politely and they were nice enough to remake it, the only thing was it wasn’t that it was made poorly, it was just wasn’t a good dish. I went for the steak tacos and was surprisingly disappointed. They weren’t bad, but at the same time lacked any spice or taste. The taco was soft and tender, but I literally had to look down to remember that I was eating a taco because there was no flavor. If I were eating Mexican food in North Dakota, this place might suffice, but Texans know good tex-mex and this isn’t, but honestly not sure what type of Mexican food they’re aiming for. The margarita was ok and the chips/salsa were good. We started with a bowl of tortilla, which was much thicker than you normally find and tasted like bland bean soup or something. We gave it two try’s, but I don’t see myself coming back here to eat. It might be ok for drinks and chips/salsa, but that’s about it. If they could only takeover the sol irandes spot, then they might be ok, but I don’t think people will venture this far for Mexican food. I would only put this place a slight notch over Sol Irandes and I would consider that some of the worst Mexican food in downtown/uptown, it only thrives from its location and poor tourists thinking it’s good.

Will Agave Azul survive in its hidden location with its simple bare bones menu? It’s patio quietly gleams with its bright blue lit tree amidst old forgotten buildings. The flashy dining room, that feels almost upscale, was largely empty on a Friday night, but the bar was almost full. The owner and chef came to my table after my meal and asked me with earnestness how everything was. He shook my hand with a friendly vulnerability. Agave Azul has a smart recipe. It’s décor is perfect modern Mexican flash. It’s menu is one page, with most items under $ 10. The selected appetizers range from ceviche to brussel sprouts, to a shrimp churro. The mains are affordable tortas and tacos. The chips and salsa are good. When I asked for a wine list, the waiter offered only Merlot(he pronounced the t) and Pinot Grigio. «That’s it?» I puzzled aloud. It’s a margarita bar, I thought, remembering how a friend from Carrolton lit up when I mentioned the new downtown location. «That’s a thing in Carrolton.» He smiled with bright eyes. I liked what I interpreted as a thoughtful economy of choices — décor, menu and location. It’s such a tough business to be in restaurants. I ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, pollo con Mole with fried egg $ 17. It was the only entrée that wasn’t a taco or torta. It arrived in massive portion — easily shareable for two, or even three or four as an appetizer. The sauce tasted a bit more like barbecue but was fresh and had a nice tang. This food is meant for drinking. The menu posted a clear caveat, almost an apology that the menu would be changing and expanding. I liked the young entrepreneurial attack on the downtown market that Agave Azul had seemingly strategized — the basics done well with enough hits for everyone. I hope agave azul’s continues to expand its identity as a better than average local tex mex place instead of a cheesey margarita pick up joint. Ambient patio

This new location for The much loved Agave Azule just opened in April of 2015. Everything from the chips through appetizers to main dishes was fresh, well made, carefully seasoned, and delightful.

So glad they have opened on this side of down town. Great naturally shaded patio under huge oak tree. Definitely liked the margaritas. I had LA Cremona and it was such a good tots. The tuna tacos are so tasty. We’ll be back!

Agave Azul’s soft opening is an undeniable downtown hit. I asked for life-changing menu items and they recommended the tacos: shrimp and beef in that order. I had three shrimp tacos, served plump with a creamy sauce and garnished with spicy, pickled onions on homemade corn tortillas. The tortillas are small, as they should be for Mexican-style street tacos, but who can call the enormous pieces of shellfish on them just shrimp– they are delectable. The beef tacos are buttery, I stole one off of my partner’s plate. Poof and they’re gone, as they are quite satisfying. The Margarita menu is almost as fun to read through as the process to drink the elixirs, with names like Frida Rita named after the feminist artista. Agave Azul’s address is tres-veces-tres(3 times 3 en español) on Harwood in the newly renovated Lone Star Gas Building. I can’t wait to see what opens next door at the adjacent Art Deco space that is undergoing a renovation as well. You’re certain to have a Quixotic experience. I know we’ll be back for more.
