I’ve been visiting since it was Alligator Café, and I’m happy to see that not much has changed. They still have most of the cajun food they served before, and have added Bucky Moonshine’s still serves the best gumbo in Dallas, hands down. I typically visit for lunch, and I’ve never had to wait longer than expected(for what I order). If you’re in a hurry, get the gumbo as it comes out very quickly. Aside from the gumbo, I’ve also tried the calamari, fried catfish, grilled chicken, garlic green beans, dirty rice, and the bread pudding. I’d order it all again but dear lord that bread pudding! Fluffier and lighter(I don’t mean healthier) than other bread puddings I’ve tried. When my wife and I are trying to be healthier, we get the grilled chicken with garlic green beans(tons of garlic on these beans!). Light and flavorful, this is one of the healthier options in the area. Last time I was there I saw they added shepherd’s pie to the menu… looking forward to trying this next.

Had lunch here on a Saturday afternoon. The menu is a mix of comfort foods from the south and southwest. Shrimp and grits, Shepherds pie, fried seafood and poboys are a few of the items. The food was surprisingly good. Kind of like a slightly upscale diner. I had the baby back ribs with collard greens and sweet potato. My wife had the atchafalaya — blackened catfish with shrimp étouffée and dirty rice. Both dishes were cooked perfectly. It doesn’t have the trendy veneer of a lot of Dallas restaurants and that’s probably why the entrée prices are in the $ 8 to $ 16 range. The service seemed adequate but there were only 4 or 5 other tables with customers. Not sure how they’d do with a packed house. They also have their own parking lot so that’s a big plus in Deep Ellum.

Went here on a Saturday. The 3 stars is for service. I would give the food maybe a 3.5. Service: The place was packed and it took 30−40mins to even get a drink, despite ordering one! Food:I had the boudin balls, shrimp and grits and Louisiana gumbo. The shrimp and grits was very rich and def not the best I’ve had. Boudin balls were maybe a 2⁄5. The gumbo was the best, as I’ve had better at other places in town, but it was the best thing we ordered! Atmosphere: great! Felt like a real cozy southern hangout. Had great live music that wasn’t too loud, just right. May be best just to come get a drink at the bar have an appetizer and catch up with a friend!
