I had the pleasure of hosting an event with TBAAL. Thank you Curtis and Marsha for helping to make our event such a success!

I’ve been here more than 5 times, I only checked in a few times because my church convenes here. Reunion church in the front/​left theatre.
I love the idea of having church in this kind of space.

TBAAL offers many events that will culturally stimulate any person who is in tune with the «arts». I have seen many plays, watched multiple live bands and individual performances, as well as seen very funny comedians here. I can honestly say that nothing I have seen at TBAAL has ever disappointed me.
I would recommend people becoming a member si that you can be fully informed of all events that happen at TBAAL.

This place is hard to find and the parking is interesting. In the since there is quite a bit across the street but they have meters as well. Maybe it’s just the corner location that throws you off. Nevertheless, the theater is cozy and comfortable once you step through the door. I went to see a Zane play and the seating was pretty good.

Been thrice. Nice, cozy venue for creative artists. I’ve seen neo soul crooners and New Jack Swing artists — felt so close to the performers in the intimate setting. Considering that TBAAL is in the state of the art convention center, it’s not as nice as one might expect. It’s tucked away with wooden chairs, reminiscent of a high school auditorium. However, what it lacks in luster, it makes up for in unexpected gems of artists. Not so mainstream artists frequent TBAAL, but keep your eyes open for promotional materials, or the performers will be out of Dallas before you even knew they were here. Pro: underground parking is so convenient, although $ 10-​$ 15. Con: I feel like I’ve ‘been around the world and I, I, I… I can’t find the TBAAL’. Man, it’s a maze getting to that auditorium from the main parking entrance. Another con: the bathrooms on that side of the convention center (dare I say — suck). Grateful for the artists the venue brings — adds a star to make it a 4 star rating. Without the great talent, it would be only 3 stars.

In a large urban city such as Dallas you would expect to find art and culture. The Black Academy of Arts and Letters is a staple that provides a venue for local and nationally acclaimed (Lalah Hathaway, Eryka Badu) African American artist (of every medium) to display their talents. It is a nonprofit organization founded and operated by Curtis King. I was first introduced to TBAAL and Curtis when he spoke briefly at my church about the annual MLK Celebration. Since then I’ve attended several events for very reasonable prices and I’ve enjoyed them all. My most recent visit was on a Friday night for Poets N Jazz. It was an intimate grown-​up setting with a full bar, jazz band and poetry.
I’m grateful for the work that Mr. King is doing and wish him and TBAAL many many more years of great work and great art.

The Black Academy of Arts and Letters is an organization that not only provides great entertainment, but it also provides a great service to the Dallas community.
I’ve had the privilege to work with Curtis King (the founder of TBAAL) for the past 6 years on the annual MLK concert that TBAAL gives. Through these performances, I’ve seen how much of an impact that the Academy has on the children in the Dallas community. Kids who normally might be getting into trouble are instead performing in front of large audiences, showcasing and enhancing their performing arts skills. It’s always a good thing when you can give a person who has exceptional talent a platform for them to express themselves. There’s no way to measure how much of a positive impact that this organization has brought to this community.
Along with the positivity with the kids, TBAAL puts on great shows that feature top of the line entertainers. World famous artists such as Cece Winans, Erykah Badu (who actually got started in the academy), and Wynton Marsalis always grace the stage at TBAAL. If you check their schedule at
, you are sure to find a great event that they’ll be putting on at any time of the year.
When you attend a performance at TBAAL, not only will you be attending an event that will definitely entertain you, but you will also be contributing to a great organization that does great things for Dallas.

This is my second time attending an event at TBAAL. Both times were amazing. This event, Abyssinian: A Gospel Celebration featuring Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and Chorale Le Château, was exceptional. The Chorale was on FIYA (a close cousin to FIRE but a lot hotter) and Wynton and crew were doing there thing like they always do. Then to top off the night all of the featured artist came out and greeted all the fans despite the fact that they have a 1 am call time to get on the road for the next show.
