What the heck is up with the name of this place? Tom Thumb. So strange. I won’t let that change my assessment… Apparently these are a chain or there are multiple or something. This one is actually in rather a convenient area. Right in the middle of this shopping plaza it’s the perfect spot to grab booze… or whatever else you need after heading home from a long day of shopping! It’s nothing fancy and gets the job done. Yay Tom Thumb for having wine I like!

I love Texas & I love Tom Thumb. In particular, I love this Tom Thumb. My all time favorite, it has a special place in my heart as well as Dallas history. Located in Highland Park Village in a stunning building, its unlike any other Tom Thumb in Texas. Most people don’t realize that HPV was America’s first shopping center and the prototype for shopping centers all over the country. This unique Mediterranean Spanish-style development was constructed in 1931. HPV was the first planned shopping center in the US with a unified architectural style, with the stores facing in toward an interior parking area, all built and managed under a single ownership. The story of the development of the Village began in 1906 when entrepreneur John S. Armstrong purchased 1,326 acres of land, that was being used as a cattle trail, now its called Preston Road. Armstrong envisioned a exclusive planned community just north of Dallas, so he and his two son-in laws, Hugh Prather and Edgar Flippen hired architect Wilbur David Cook, the designer of Beverly Hills, to lay out the new Town, which opened in 1907. The new community was named Highland Park. Over the years, Highland Park has become one of the most beautiful communities in the nation, rivaling Beverly Hills. Because of a good original master plan and strict deed restrictions today it consist of gorgeous homes, fine schools and beautiful parks. HPV Grand Opening was in 1931, but it wasn’t until 1935 that Safeway Supermarket opened, which is now Tom Thumb. Smaller than any of the other Tom Thumb locations, its my families #1 choice. It has the best florist inside with a wall of coolers that house the most stunning flower arrangements & fresh roses. It also has a cute little pharmacy. Being a chef I’m always cooking for a crowd, especially at home for special occasions. The only difference is that crowd is usually blood related & doesn’t tip well. ha ha ha! «Just kidding guys.» ;) When I cook for my family I always think of going to this location. It’s so very special & unique, like I feel about my family, & I always find exactly what Im looking for. Tom Thumb prides itself on local products. They carry quality meats & seafood which my family can’t get enough of. I grill tons of steaks, salmon & chicken & make tons of crab cakes & salads, all which I buy from Tom Thumb. The best«tips» from my family have all come from products I have purchased from this store. Recently I purchased & grilled up some salmon with herbed butter I made up fresh for my father. When dinner was over he leaned over the table, looked me straight in the eye & says with such seriousness, «I think that was the best piece of salmon I ever ate.» That happens every time I buy things they love from this store. «Thank you Father I think that was the sweetest tip ever!» ;) The lump crab that Tom Thumb carries makes the best crab cakes you will ever eat. Another fave in my family that gets rave reviews :)‘ Its so simple. Beat a egg in a ½ cup of mayo with one tablespoon each of, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire, hot sauce & old bay seasoning. Fold in 20 saltines smashed up in your hands & lightly fold in 1 lb crab without breaking it. Chill in the frig 2 hours then take 1⁄3 cup scoops out roll in flour & fry to a golden brown. Serve atop salad greens with fresh lemon & guaranteed you will be making a Tom Thumb crab run each week too :)‘ There is a awesome little wine shop inside & a fabulous little deli & bakery. They carry a fantastic cheese selection that has made many a stunning cheese, fruit & wine feast at our family gatherings. There are also chic little café tables outside where you can sit, have a snack & marvel at the stunning architecture of the buildings of Highland Park Village & it’s surrounding meticulously landscaped grounds. The fresh herbs & beautiful potted plants & flowers that line the sidewalks lend their intoxicating scent while shoppers come & go in this historical landmark. Here, its a small community style high end market that is not like any other Tom Thumb, here, it’s a charming old world quaint market, from a vanished age, in a timeless setting, of remarkable beauty. Highly recommend!

This is a small Tom Thumb but they seem to have everything I need when I go in. The employees are always friendly. The produce is always fresh and the shelved items are always stocked. The pharmacy staff is wonderful. The pharmacist is always so friendly and remembers every return customer by name. Parking has its ups and downs. As long as you don’t go during lunch or dinner hours you shouldn’t have a problem finding a spot close to the store.
