Quilts and an odd name The first thing you notice when you walk into the Skidompha Library is all the lovely quilts hanging off the walls. Lots of New England libraries have quilts but I’ve never seen so many. The next thing that might get your attention is the name of the library. What exactly is a Skidompha? A name that sounds vaguely familiar but I couldn’t quite place it. Turns out the odd name is the combination of the first letters of the names of the group of ladies that started the library. Pretty cool and unusual. The library itself is very pleasant and user friendly. Lots of room to move around and cool art hanging everywhere. Even a couple of little sandboxes for the kids to play outside on the patio. A different and unique Maine library. The quilts alone are worth a visit to look at and the ancient photos of the ladies that decided so long ago that the town needed a library is something special indeed.

I haven’t actually been to the library. I am writing to recommend the Skidompha Second Hand Book Shop which is part of the library. It has an extensive and eclectic selection of books, with some DVDs and CDs. All items are inexpenisve and the proceeds support the library. We will select good books, DVDs and CDs to take up and donate on our next trip. They are at 115 Elm Street, just up the street from King Eider’s Pub which is where you should eat, try the baked brie! If you like this store you must visit the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Libray Used Book store. You can’t miss it, it is in the center of town. They have a similar but not identical selection of used books, be sure to explore all the rooms. They also appreciate donations and all proceeds go to the support of the library.(See separate review of the library in Boothbary Harbor section).
