A cute little forest preserve tucked away on 87th in Darien. Oldfield Oaks has a somewhat short 1.1 mile trail(with another loop that’s about 0.6 miles long), making it much smaller than nearby Waterfall Glen, but still beautiful and great for a short(er) hike, walk or run. What I don’t like about Oldfield Oaks is how close it is to the street on all sides. I could hear traffic during my entire walk around, and I circled both loops. At some points in the trail you can see the front yards of houses across the street. I guess that makes it really nice for the people who live there(you can walk to the forest preserve!), but not as awesome for pretending that one is in a nice, serene, remote forest that’s not in a suburb with such heavy traffic. The southern loop trail is absolutely gorgeous this time of year, it circles a meadow filled with tall reeds, and at one point there’s a little incline, and you can see all of the trees around with the leaves about to change color. The northern loop is your standard wooded trail, but the trees here are really gorgeous, with tall gnarled limbs and dark corrugated bark. Wildlife(that I saw) consisted of squirrels and robins.
