I don’t believe that Tri-Fit Custom Golf and Darren Anderson need any introduction. According to Golf Digest, Darren is one of the top golf fitters in the country. He hailed from Custom Golf Shop in Stamford, CT(closed business), which for many years serious golfers from Fairfield county would know was once the best place to have clubs made and altered. Sadly, I was a junior golfer with the no earnings during the heydays of Custom Golf and never had the chance to use their service. Now with Custom Golf gone, Tri-Golf, in my opinion, has taken that top spot. Fast forward many years and some money in my back pocket, I decided to meet Darren and go through his evaluation process late last year. I told myself I would never buy golf clubs off the rack or from one of the big chains: Dick’s, Golfsmith, ever again… The evaluation process goes like this: (i) Darren will ask you to bring your current clubs in to test out against current models This is so you can see the difference in performance between the various models. Golf is a personal game and I tell Darren what I’m looking for in a golf club(in this case irons) in terms of look and feel. If you don’t have an idea, no worries, Darren will make some suggestions for you. (ii) hit some shots with current clubs and different custom configurations, which for an iron set is a 7-iron. Based on your feedback during the hitting session, Darren will change the shaft and heads to determine the right club. If you’ve ever gone through a contact lens fitting, its essentially the same process:-) (iii) if you’ve fallen in love with a configuration, Darren will order the clubs with your desired specs directly from the manufacturer and payment is made (iv) once the clubs arrive, you go will go through another session of hitting balls, so that Darren can check the lie angle, etc. I’m a short guy, 5’6″ so Darren adjusted the lie angle to ensure that the I was hitting the club perfectly square at impact. Unfortunately, the standard lie of most golf clubs that are sold in the United States don’t fit me. The fitting evaluation is free, if you make a club purchase. I was really keen on getting Custom clubs, so I didn’t consider the price of the evaluation. In any event, Darren will tell you the cost of the evaluation, on the off chance you don’t like the clubs you’ve tried during the fitting process or simply just want to test the latest clubs on the market against yours. Overall, I’m a huge fan of Tri-Golf. If it wasn’t for the fact that I spend most of my time abroad in Asia, I would purchase all my clubs here. Darren himself, is a direct guy. He won’t sell you hard on any product, but he will tell you directly what will improve your game after the evaluation process. I, for one, want a club fitter who is experienced and knowledgeable, but more importantly cares deeply about the service he provides! Parting Advice: Custom Golf Clubs are not just for experienced golfers, but are for golfers of all skill levels. Why would you buy golf clubs off the rack, when you can the very same clubs custom made with a personalized fitting service for the same price!!!
