Absolute Martial Arts advertises themselves as «specializing in 4 – 12 yr olds», but were not at all understanding of my 4 yr olds anxiety. He did great once he finally joined in, but when he resisted going out on the mat at his second class, no one greeted him or encouraged him to join the class. I get that there is a certain level of respect and discipline involved with martial arts, but don’t market yourselves towards beginners if you’re not willing to put forth the extra effort to make them feel comfortable. There’s a difference between babying/coddling a child and being encouraging/welcoming them to a new experience. After going elsewhere, I’m shocked at the positive difference between the staff’s interactions with my son and the other students. This place may be great for some kids, and there is no «one size fits all», but if your child is shy or reluctant to try new things, don’t bring them here. Also, while I was signing paperwork, two staff members were openly talking about an underage girl dating older men, which I found to be rather inappropriate and unprofessional.
