I’ve been to this store maybe 2 or 3 times while living in Davis, but this last visit just left me feeling off and unlikely to go back. My husband and I had just finished purchasing books next door at the Avid Reader, and decided to venture into Active Avid Reader to see what they had, and to hopefully find a gift for a baby shower. All was well at first and the employee there was pleasant. The visit was comfortable until we started perusing the store. Ever get that feeling that you’re being followed? Well just know that you definitely are being followed in this store to make sure you aren’t stealing anything! Even if it is understandable to keep a close eye on guests because you have a shoplifting problem, it isn’t really necessary to ask me if I want you to hold my things at the front desk while I shop. Especially when the only things I’m holding are my purse and two books I purchased from next door. Two stars because it’s a pretty nifty shop and takes me back to my childhood. I think a little reformatting of the store layout would do wonders for both customers AND the business itself.

Wonderful community asset! What would Downtown Davis be without some nice small businesses? Every town needs a book shop, nice selection, wonderful atmosphere to peruse books in AND Avid Reader finds ways to support the local community performing arts groups. The manager is especially helpful and nice.

I tried to return a game that had damaged shrink wrap. They told me I couldn’t return it(or get store credit) because of the shrink wrap. I’m shocked they couldn’t even give me store credit. I’ll shop elsewhere next time.

Bought a book at Avid Reader and then stopped at this store to buy a game for family night at home. Two women sitting behind counter, and just one group of customers. Older woman at counter, likely the owner, demanded that i give her my purse if I wanted to shop there due to shoplifting. Why would I give my purse to a stranger, what security is she offering my valuables if her store lacks security for her ask something so bizarre. I am in my 60s and had never been in there, so why I was accused of being a potential thief is beyond my comprehension especially as their bookstore, where I had just bought a book, totally ignores customers. I left a msg for owner about my poor treatment but no call back. Sad state for Davis to treat local shoppers this way, as I will shop Amazon in the future. If you open a business, it is your problem to deal with security, not mine.

I was very pleased to find that this store has a very nice, new young lady working there who wraps presents and is always pleasant. I used to never like to shop there all that much because there was a very loud gal with glasses who I found offensive. She talked too much and always had to find some way to «put down» whatever I said, even if it was something nice. I went back to buy a card as a last resort, and was glad to find that they’d hired someone nice for a change. I now shop there on Sundays, and more often, because I know someone will be happy to see me there.
