Aggie Surplus(until recently called the Bargain Barn) is truly a hidden UCD gem. When I was a student here I picked up a water-electrolysis hydrogen generator for $ 25, a digital projector with lots of life left for $ 75, and an array of dorm and lab furniture. Be sure to check out items that are up for«public offer,» it has been my experience that the listing departments will accept pretty much any offer on equipment that has been around for more than a month.

Binders, binders, everywhere. Everyone loves cheap binders — like cheap as in FREE. That’s right, this is your one-stop shop for free(used but good) binders. – that’s what I come here for, and I just wanted to share that tidbit. ^^ But they do also have: cheap/used: electronics, furniture, books, random stuff your university garage sale, located directly behind the Potter/Wall dorms at Tercero.

I have an idle fantasy of furnishing my house from here. After all what kitchen is complete without a 1970’s gas chromatograph, what bedroom doesn’t need an anesthesia machine, what garage doesn’t need a milk homogenization machine, and what evil lair is complete without an array of vintage iMacs in all the pretty colors.

When I was in college, I used to browse this place once a week looking for deals to flip on eBay. Made good money. Haven’t been there in years, but if it is still standing, it’s a great little secret in Davis. I remember when I first found out about it, I thought I had stumbled on a hidden gold mine.

What everyone else said… Any store that sells filing cabinets, 5 year old imacs(original fruit flavor!), lab equipment, and 20 year old Dodge vans to haul them all home in is worth a peek. The UC’s answer to Denio’s Auction.

Yup… if you remotely love thrift stores or are a tech geek… you need to give it a go. It has been UCDs secret for many a year. Desks, dorm couches, old microscopes… every once in a while… an old photospectrometer, ambulance gurney, or x ray machine… maybe even an old animal science incubator…(still with cultures?) or an old truck or lately a sail boat. Crap shoot, super odd ball and lots of fun.

Any place where you can buy old office equipment, old computers, and a microscope at the same time — is a good time. They have projectors, chairs, desks, tables, laptops, desktops, etc… They have solenoids, Microscopes, exercise machines, and all the different kinds of things that a University owns and replaces. Just an endless variety of crap for sale. And cheap.

If you go to UCD and are in the art dept. you can get your Marcel Duchamp on here. The man who basically came up with the idea that anything could be art would love this place. Completely random university shite for sale. Where else could you get a 17″ JC Penny TV, PORTABLEBROWNPOTENTIOMETER, a KLYSTRONMAGNETSOLENOID, a NIKON105077MICROSCOPE, or a Nordic Track excercise machine in the same place?

Some interesting and cheap equipment can be had here, but the place is stereotypical of a University-run operation: they don’t answer their phones, their hours are very limited, and they don’t even know what’s on their web site, which is of course full of incorrect information.
